Parque das Ruínas is a public park and cultural center in Santa Teresa, set among the surviving walls of a mansion once owned by Laurinda Santos Lobo. Metal and glass structures let you walk through the old brickwork and climb to viewpoints over Rio, including Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf Mountain and the city center. Inside, look for art exhibitions; the grounds also have an outdoor café and host cultural events, including music. It is a rewarding stop for architecture, art and city views in one visit.

From mansion to cultural center

The park occupies the remains of the Murtinho Nobre mansion, built around 1900. It was once the home of Laurinda Santos Lobo, a prominent figure in Rio society. Artists and intellectuals gathered here for parties and celebrations in Santa Teresa.

After the house fell into disrepair, a preservation project converted the site into a cultural center. The design kept the mansion’s brick walls and added contemporary metal and glass structures. This combination lets you see the old building as you move through a space adapted for public use.

Walking through the ruins

The structures are arranged so you can follow paths through the remains of the mansion and climb toward the viewpoints. The route brings the surviving walls into view alongside the newer construction. An art gallery is part of the site, and exhibitions can be found inside the building, including in its lower level.

The park also has a theatre and holds cultural events, including live music and outdoor activities. What is happening can change, so check the schedule before travelling if an event is central to your visit. Weekend stalls selling local goods have also been set up in the grounds.

Views across Rio

From the upper levels, the outlook takes in different parts of the city. Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain are among the landmarks visible from the park; views also extend toward downtown Rio. The position on the Santa Teresa hills gives the site a broad city panorama, with the old mansion walls forming part of the foreground.

Light affects how much detail you can see across the bay and city, so a sunny day is a sensible choice if the viewpoints are your main reason for coming. The park is in Santa Teresa, and the climb up to it adds some effort to the visit. Before setting out, check whether any renovation work is limiting access to parts of the grounds or building.
