Set on a hill in Rio’s Glória neighborhood, Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro is a small colonial-era church with views over Guanabara Bay, Glória and downtown. Opened in 1739, it is noted as Rio’s first church built in the Baroque style and was a favored place of worship for the royal family. Inside, look for the painted tiles and paintings, then visit the sacristy to see its decorated ceiling. A museum and reading room are also part of the site.

A church above Glória

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro stands above the Glória neighborhood, on a hill that has served as a prominent point in Rio since the city’s early years. The hill was taken from the French by Estácio de Sá in the 1560s, before he expanded the Portuguese settlement.

The church opened in 1739 and is identified as the first church in Rio built in the Baroque style. Its unusual octagonal plan and domed roof distinguish it from the city’s other colonial churches. From the grounds, the view takes in Guanabara Bay, Glória and downtown.

Royal baptisms and the church interior

The church was a favored place of worship for Brazil’s royal family. Among those baptized here were Dona Maria II, Dom Pedro II and Princess Isabel. Dom Pedro II later granted the church an imperial title.

Inside, take time to look at the painted tiles and paintings, as well as the church’s monumental pillars and vaulted ceilings. The sacristy at the rear has a painted ceiling. A museum and a reading room are annexed to the building, adding places to explore beyond the main church.

Getting up the hill

You can reach the church by the stairway beside Rua da Russel, or take the elevator from Praça Luís de Camões if the climb is a concern. The hilltop setting is part of the visit, with views over the surrounding neighborhood and bay.

If you want to attend Mass or visit during a baptism or wedding, check the church’s website for the schedule before setting out. For a visit focused on the scenery, early morning and sunset are suggested times.
