Boulevard Olímpico is a waterfront promenade in Centro, Rio de Janeiro, created during the port area's renewal for the 2016 Olympic Games. Walk along Guanabara Bay for open views of the bay and Rio-Niterói Bridge, and stop at Praça Mauá and the Museum of Tomorrow. The route is also known for Eduardo Kobra's large Etnias mural, which depicts people from five ethnic groups. Warehouses, exhibition spaces, museums, restaurants and street art add cultural stops along the way, though the broad promenade has little shade.

A waterfront renewed for the 2016 Olympics

Boulevard Olímpico runs through the port area of central Rio, along the edge of Guanabara Bay. The waterfront was renewed for the 2016 Olympic Games, when the area hosted competitions broadcasts, performances and cultural and sports events. Today, its open promenade, bike path, museums and former port warehouses make it a place to walk between cultural stops.

The name brings together areas that include Porto Maravilha, with its warehouses and Praça Mauá, and Orla Conde, which continues from Praça Mauá toward Praça XV. The route is broad and open, with views across the water and toward the Rio-Niterói Bridge. There is little shade in parts of the area, so plan for the sun if you expect to walk for a while.

Etnias and the waterfront art

One of the area's most distinctive works is Etnias, a mural by Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra on Avenida Rodrigues Alves, near the Museum of Tomorrow. The large painted panel represents people from five ethnic groups associated with five continents. Its scale makes it easy to spot as you move through the port district, and its subject brings a focus on human diversity to an otherwise contemporary waterfront setting.

Street art is part of the wider walk, alongside sculptures and open spaces. Take time to look around as you go between the mural, Praça Mauá and the museum area; the promenade is also used for exhibitions and public performances.

Planning a walk

The Boulevard is a collection of public spaces and attractions rather than a single enclosed site. You can follow the waterfront and choose stops such as the Museum of Tomorrow, exhibition halls and the port warehouses. The museum is known for interactive content about the planet's future, and the nearby square provides a natural point to pause before continuing along Orla Conde.

Restaurants, street vendors and shops are also found along the route. The area can draw more people on weekends, so a weekday walk may feel less busy. If you want to cover the surrounding port district as well as the promenade, leave time for the extra stops. The route's open character and limited shade make sun protection useful on bright days.
