In Recife’s Várzea district, Oficina Cerâmica Francisco Brennand brings together an art museum, studio and gardens in a former family pottery. The complex grew from a disused factory that Francisco Brennand began transforming in 1971. Inside and outdoors, you’ll find around 2,000 works, including ceramic sculptures, tiles, paintings and drawings. Give yourself time to walk among the gardens, fountains and large-scale pieces, then visit the gift shop for ceramic souvenirs. The expansive grounds and unusual works make this a rewarding stop for anyone interested in Brazilian art.

From family pottery to artist’s complex

Oficina Cerâmica began as a family pottery on the site of an older mill and factory. Francisco Brennand started reshaping the disused works in 1971, turning the property into a studio and exhibition complex devoted largely to his own art. The old industrial buildings remain part of the experience: you move through a working landscape transformed into a place to see ceramics, paintings and sculpture.

Brennand studied in Europe, where he encountered artists including Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. His work ranges across ceramic pieces, tiles, paintings, drawings and engravings. The collection numbers around 2,000 works, with sculpture and ceramics central to the displays.

The visit moves between indoor galleries and outdoor areas. Sculptures, some monumental in scale, sit along garden paths and near fountains and lakes. The grounds are part of the setting for the works, so allow time to walk between them rather than treating the visit as a quick circuit of indoor rooms.

A square designed by landscape architect Burle Marx separates the workshop from the Academy. The Academy holds a permanent exhibition of Brennand’s paintings and drawings, giving you a chance to see work on paper alongside the ceramics and sculpture elsewhere on the property.

Planning your visit

The complex is in Várzea, west of central Recife, and is some distance from the central areas. A taxi from Boa Viagem is one way to reach it. The Instituto Ricardo Brennand is nearby, so the two can be combined in one outing if you want to dedicate more time to museums.

The venue has a restaurant, restrooms and parking on site, and its entrance, restrooms and parking are listed as wheelchair accessible. Advance ticket booking is recommended. If you want to bring home a piece connected to the visit, the gift shop sells ceramic artwork and souvenirs.
