At Mariastraat 38 in Bruges, Sint-Janshospitaal is a medieval hospital complex now devoted to the history of care and art. Its surviving wards and chapel give the collection a strong sense of place: look for old medical instruments alongside religious works, including six paintings by 15th-century Bruges artist Hans Memling. The pharmacy and its herb garden add another view of how patients were treated. Allow at least 45 minutes to explore, and consider adding the apothecary to your visit.

A hospital with centuries of history

Museum Sint-Janshospitaal

Sint-Janshospitaal began caring for sick people and pilgrims in the 12th century. The institution continued to operate until the 1970s, and its buildings now house a museum on the history of medicine and care in Bruges.

The hospital was run by religious communities. In the Middle Ages, care addressed both physical and spiritual needs, which helps explain why religious artworks belonged in the hospital setting. The museum brings these strands together through objects and art connected with the institution’s past.

The former patient ward preserves the scale and structure of the old hospital. Its displays include medical instruments and objects associated with patient care, as well as religious works. The old ward’s timber roof is a notable part of the interior; the complex also includes a church and chapel.

Among the medical displays are instruments that can look severe by modern standards. The collection also includes hospital sedan chairs and material on historical medical practice. In the attic, a video installation adds another way to engage with the building’s history, alongside quieter areas for reflection.

Hans Memling and the former pharmacy

Art is a major part of the collection. Six works by Hans Memling, the 15th-century painter who lived and worked in Bruges, are displayed here. One is the Shrine of St Ursula, a gilded oak reliquary shaped like a small Gothic building and painted with scenes from the saint’s life, including views of Cologne.

The former pharmacy offers a separate look at traditional medicine. Its small herb garden can be seen in the hospital complex. If you want to include both the hospital displays and the apothecary, check that your ticket covers both before you go.
