Neue Burg

Neue Burg is the monumental, curved wing of the Hofburg on Heldenplatz in central Vienna.

Neue Burg is the monumental, curved wing of the Hofburg on Heldenplatz in central Vienna. Its long neoclassical façade and rooftop statues make the building worth seeing even if you do not go inside. The palace was intended as part of a much larger imperial forum, but the Habsburg Empire fell before that vision could be completed. Today, its museums bring together historic arms and armour, musical instruments and finds from Ephesus. Leave time to walk around the square and rest in the garden behind the palace.

An unfinished imperial plan

Neue Burg

Neue Burg is the final wing added to Vienna’s Hofburg, the former imperial palace of the Habsburg rulers. Its great curved front faces Heldenplatz, where the palace complex meets the city. The scale is striking: a long, symmetrical façade with restrained decoration and statues set along the roofline.

The building was part of a much larger scheme for a Kaiserforum, an imperial composition intended to bring the palace, court and monarchy together. Plans included a second Neue Burg opposite it and arches connecting the complex with the twin museums on the Ringstrasse, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Natural History Museum. That larger arrangement was never completed.

Construction of the wing began in the late 19th century and continued into the early 20th. The Habsburg Empire collapsed in 1918, before Neue Burg could fulfil its intended role as a residence and ceremonial centre. The building was instead adapted for museums and state institutions. Its unfinished place in the broader plan is part of what makes the façade so compelling: it has the scale of an imperial centre, but the surrounding forum was never realised.

Three museums inside the wing

The Neue Burg museums focus on different parts of history. The Collection of Arms and Armour includes pieces dating mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its displays bring together historic protective equipment and weapons, including a broad range of preserved armour. Allow time to look closely at the objects rather than treating this as a quick pass through the building.

The Collection of Historic Musical Instruments holds instruments from earlier periods, including Renaissance examples. Its subject offers a change of pace from the arms collection, with objects that trace the history of music through the instruments themselves.

The Ephesos Museum presents artefacts found during Austrian archaeological excavations at Ephesus, in present-day Turkey, between 1895 and 1906. Together, the three collections make the building a useful stop for visitors interested in both imperial Vienna and objects gathered from beyond Austria.

Planning a visit

The museums occupy the southeast wing of the Hofburg. Audio guides are available for an additional charge; the listed price in the supplied material is €4, so check current details before your visit. One cited admission arrangement includes the Kunsthistorisches Museum as well as the three Neue Burg museums, and a multi-museum ticket may suit you if you intend to visit more than one collection.

Allow a few hours if you plan to see the exhibits in detail. For a shorter stop, the exterior and Heldenplatz are easy to appreciate without entering the museums. The garden behind the palace is another place to pause, and the illuminated building is especially striking after dark. The museum is closed on Mondays; check current access and ticket information before setting out.
