The Museum of Military History is in Vienna’s Arsenal, at Arsenal 1, and traces Austrian military history from the 16th century into the modern era. Its galleries bring together uniforms, weapons, artillery and vehicles, with sections on the World Wars and earlier conflicts. The Sarajevo gallery holds the car in which Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Sophie were killed in 1914, along with his uniform. Look up at the building’s architecture, then explore both museum floors. A separate tank hall is also part of the visit; check which areas are open before you go.

The museum occupies the Vienna Arsenal, a former military complex commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph I. Its architecture is part of the visit: take time to look at the building before heading into the galleries.

Inside, exhibits trace Austrian military history from the 16th century onward. The collection ranges from uniforms, armor and weapons to artillery and military vehicles. Paintings, maps and other objects add context to the equipment on display. The galleries are arranged chronologically, so moving through them gives a sense of how Austria’s military history developed across successive periods.

The displays cover the Habsburg monarchy and Austrian military involvement in conflicts including the Napoleonic Wars, the Ottoman wars and the First and Second World Wars. The collection includes weapons from different eras, from muskets to machine guns, as well as cannons, tanks and aircraft.

The First World War section gives particular attention to the events surrounding the Sarajevo assassination. The car in which Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were killed in 1914 is displayed alongside Franz Ferdinand’s uniform, which bears damage from the shooting. These objects connect the museum’s military history to the event that immediately preceded the outbreak of the war.

Planning your visit

Set aside several hours if you want to see both floors and spend time with the larger galleries. Explanatory text is available in English for many exhibits, though coverage is not consistent throughout. Some displays can also be explored in greater depth using the Hearonymous app, which lets visitors enter an exhibit number.

The tank hall is a separate part of the visit, around a 15-minute walk from the main museum according to one account. Restoration or maintenance has affected access to some galleries at times, so check current conditions before setting out. The museum is closed on Mondays and open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 am to 5 pm.
