Bicentennial Park is a 40-hectare park in Sydney Olympic Park, west of central Sydney, with wetlands, meadows, a lake and broad paths for walking and cycling. Take the boardwalk through the Badu Mangroves, watch for waterbirds, or climb Treillage Tower for views across the wetlands and towards the city skyline. Families can make time for the playgrounds and water-play area, while picnic shelters and barbecue facilities suit a longer stop. Waterview Cafe is on hand for a break. The park is especially photogenic when autumn leaves change colour.

A park built around the wetlands

Bicentennial Park

Bicentennial Park was created in 1988, the year of Australia’s bicentenary, to protect and conserve wetlands around Homebush Bay. The park lies within Sydney Olympic Park, the sports and entertainment precinct developed west of central Sydney for the 2000 Olympic Games.

Its 40 hectares combine wetland habitat with landscaped parkland. The Badu Mangroves and nearby waterbird refuge give the park a natural focus, while meadows, gentle hills and Lake Belvedere open up the landscape. Birds are a particular draw: bring binoculars or a camera and look out for species around the wetlands and refuge.

Boardwalks, paths and views

Walking and cycling paths run through the park, linking open lawns, picnic areas and wetland scenery. The boardwalk through the Badu Mangroves lets you follow the habitat without leaving the path. Other routes pass ponds and meadows, with opportunities to pause at bird hides and look for wildlife.

For a wider view, head to Treillage Tower. Its elevated viewing platform looks across the wetlands and surrounding parkland, with the city skyline visible beyond. The paths also make the park practical for a run or bike ride; cycling routes connect different parts of the large parkland.

Picnics and family visits

Picnic areas, shelters and barbecue facilities make it easy to plan a meal outdoors. Some picnic spots sit beside the water, and free electric barbecues are available. The park also has playgrounds, including Village Green, as well as a water-play area for children. Waterview Cafe provides a stop for food or a drink during a visit.

If you are meeting a group, plan ahead for a covered bench because these are popular. For a more flexible picnic, bring a mat and look for a shady patch of grass. Dog walking is possible on leash, but check the signs and keep clear of areas where dogs are not allowed to help protect local wildlife.
