Koala Park Sanctuary is a privately run wildlife park in West Pennant Hills, in Sydney’s north-west. Koalas are the main draw, with keeper presentations that explain more about them; you can also see native birds, kangaroos, wombats, dingoes, emus and reptiles. The kangaroo feeding area gives children a chance to meet the animals at close range, and the grounds provide a calm setting for a walk. Allow two to three hours to see the park at an unhurried pace.

Koala Park Sanctuary opened in 1930 in West Pennant Hills. Its founder, Noel Burnet, established the park after becoming concerned about koalas being killed for the fur trade. It remains privately owned and focuses on koalas and other native wildlife.

The grounds are described as a rainforest-like setting. The sanctuary’s collection includes koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, dingoes, emus, echidnas, reptiles and native birds. The range makes a visit about more than the koalas, though they remain the park’s central focus.

Keeper-led presentations provide information about koalas and give you a chance to observe them up close under supervision. Presentations take place during the day; 2pm and 3pm are listed as presentation times. Check the schedule on arrival if you want to plan your walk around a talk.

Kangaroos can be fed in a designated area, where food is available. Children can also find activities around the park, including opportunities to see smaller animals. Staff presentations cover animals beyond koalas, including reptiles and dingoes.

Planning your walk around the park

The sanctuary is a walk-through wildlife park, so you can explore at your own pace and pause at animal areas and presentations. A map is provided at the entrance, although some parts may take a little figuring out as you make your way around. Allow two to three hours for a fuller visit.

There is a cafe and gift shop on site, and the park has a playground. Tickets in advance are recommended. Payment is cash-only, and parking is available, including free parking options listed for the site.
