The grounds now known as Plaza General San Martín have served several purposes over time. The site once held residences for Spanish governors and later became known as the Field of Victory after the British Army was defeated. Following the May Revolution of 1810, the plaza was entrusted to General José de San Martín.

The park is among Buenos Aires’s older public green spaces. It stretches through Retiro between the area around Retiro station and government buildings that include the Foreign Ministry and the Defense Ministry.

The streets around the plaza preserve traces of Retiro’s early 20th-century character. At the turn of that century, upper-class families settled in the area and built imposing residences. One is the former Paz family palace, which now houses the Military Circle, a social club for Argentina’s military.

Looking beyond the trees gives the visit an architectural dimension: the park sits among these large historic buildings, close to Florida, Alvear and Santa Fe streets.

Trees and spaces to pause

Palo borracho and lapachos are among the species found in the grounds. Their flowers are noted toward late February, giving a seasonal reason to look closely at the park’s planting. Benches and maintained green areas make it possible to pause between walks around Retiro.

The plaza also has a playground and fenced dog areas. Families with children and people walking dogs can make use of these spaces during a visit.
