Palacio Libertad occupies the former Buenos Aires Central Post and Telegraph Office, a French Second Empire building designed by architect Norbert-Auguste Maillart. The building is a National Historic Monument and takes up an entire city block.

Former president Néstor Kirchner proposed converting the abandoned post office into a cultural center in 2005. He died in 2010, before the project was completed. After a major renovation, the building reopened as the Centro Cultural Kirchner in 2015. It is now known as Palacio Libertad, Domingo F. Sarmiento.
