The Breakers is a 70-room Vanderbilt summer residence at 44 Ochre Point Ave in Newport, built in the Italian Renaissance style and now open as a historic house museum. Its scale comes through in the Great Hall, while the rooms reveal detailed stonework, carved wood, gilded decoration and period furnishings. A self-guided audio tour explains the house and the family who commissioned it. The estate sits beside the Atlantic, and some rooms have ocean views; renovation work has sometimes restricted parts of the property.

A summer residence built to impress

The Breakers
The Breakers

Cornelius Vanderbilt II commissioned The Breakers after a fire destroyed the wooden house on the site in 1892. Architect Richard Morris Hunt designed the replacement, which was built between 1893 and 1895. The Vanderbilt family’s summer residence was conceived on a far larger scale than an ordinary seasonal home: it has 70 rooms and draws on the Italian Renaissance palaces of Genoa and Turin.

The mansion’s size and finish reflected the family’s wealth, linked to the railroads and shipping industries. Hunt’s design brought together an imposing exterior and carefully worked interiors, with decorative work by craftspeople from around the world. The result is a useful place to look at both the social ambitions and the craftsmanship associated with Newport’s Gilded Age houses.

Details to look for inside

The Great Hall is one of the central spaces of the house. Its height, columns and stonework give a sense of the scale that shapes the rooms throughout the mansion. In the Dining Room, look for the large Baccarat crystal chandeliers. The Morning Room has wall panels finished with platinum leaf, intended to catch the soft light from the coast.

Other details include gold-finished surfaces, carved wood, marble and large painted works. The library is paneled in Circassian walnut, with wood cut in Europe and stamped with gold. Sculpted figures above the pillars are easy to overlook if you move quickly through the rooms, so allow time to look up as well as across the furnishings.

How the visit works

The tour is self-guided, with audio available through the mansion’s app or an audio device. The app includes room descriptions and has been used in several languages. Personal headphones or earbuds are required for listening; bring your own, or check whether audio equipment is available to buy on site.

The route takes you through decorated rooms and explains details of the house and its history as you go. Some parts of the property have been closed during renovation work, and construction has affected views from certain rooms. Check the Newport Mansions website before your visit for current access and ticket information. Advance ticket booking is recommended.

The grounds and nearby walk

The Breakers occupies an oceanfront estate at Ochre Point, with lawns and views toward the Atlantic. The Cliff Walk passes nearby, combining coastal scenery with views toward Newport’s mansion properties. Parts of the 3.5-mile path are paved, while other sections follow dirt or require brief scrambling over rocks, so walking shoes are useful if you plan to continue along it.

The mansion is about half a mile from the Bellevue Avenue mansions. Marble House is a little over a mile away on foot, making it possible to combine properties with a longer walk. The Breakers has on-site parking, though parking nearby can fill; arriving early gives you a better chance of finding a space.
