Carnegie Hall stands at Seventh Avenue and 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan, and has welcomed concertgoers since 1891. Its programme ranges from classical music to jazz, opera and other styles, with performances in Stern Auditorium, Zankel Hall and Weill Recital Hall. Come for a concert, or arrange a guided tour to learn about the building and its musical past. The Rose Museum on the second floor adds archival material to a visit. The halls are known for their acoustics and distinctive interiors.

A concert hall since 1891

Carnegie Hall opened in 1891 under the patronage of Andrew Carnegie. Architect William Burnet Tuthill designed the building, whose exterior is made of reddish-brown brick. Its opening celebrations included a five-day music festival, with Tchaikovsky conducting his own works on the first night.

The hall has hosted performers from classical music and opera to jazz and popular music. The New York Philharmonic performed in the main auditorium from 1892 to 1962. The venue was nearly demolished in the late 1950s, but a campaign led by violinist Isaac Stern helped preserve it. The main auditorium now bears Stern’s name.

Three halls, different programmes

Isaac Stern Auditorium is the principal concert space, and major orchestras perform there. The room’s acoustics are a central part of its reputation. Weill Recital Hall hosts chamber music, while Zankel Hall presents music across genres. The smaller Zankel space has an intimate feel, a different setting from the larger main auditorium.

The interiors are part of the visit as well as the performances. Stern Auditorium has plush red seats and balconies; the venue’s halls are noted for their architecture and sound. If you are choosing seats, box seats can provide more room for your legs. Balcony and dress-circle seats can still give a good view, though boxes may have less direct sightlines.

Tours and the Rose Museum

A guided tour gives you a closer look at Carnegie Hall’s history, including stories connected to musicians who have performed there. Tours are available from October through June, but schedules are arranged around rehearsals and concerts. Call ahead to check whether a tour is running on your planned date.

The Rose Museum is on the second floor and displays archival material related to the hall. If you are attending a concert or taking a tour, leave time to see the exhibits as well. Carnegie Hall also has a gift shop and a cafeteria; nearby cafes and restaurants provide options before or after an event.
