En bref

Choose Ölüdeniz for a lagoon beach, paragliding and an easy transfer from Dalaman airport. Choose Kaş for diving, Kekova boats, an old-town evening and the Lycian ruins of Myra, Simena and Patara. Split the stay if you have a week: two or three nights each, with Kalkan as a quiet middle step.

The verdict: beach and flights, or old town and ruins

Ölüdeniz and Kaş sit at opposite ends of the same coast, and they suit different trips. Ölüdeniz is the lagoon beach, the Babadağ cable car and the paragliding, with an easy transfer from Dalaman airport. Kaş is a small harbor town with an old quarter, diving, Kekova boats and the Lycian ruins of Myra and Simena along its coast. The Ölüdeniz travel guide and the Kaş travel guide cover each in detail, and the Türkiye guide shows how they fit into a wider route.

If your trip is mostly about a beach day, a flight and an easy week, choose Ölüdeniz. If it is about evenings in an old town, diving, boats and ruins, choose Kaş. If you have a week or more, split it, and consider Kalkan as a quiet stop between the two.

A word on what this comparison is not. It does not rank the two as good and bad: both are popular for good reasons. It also does not promise a quiet stay in either in July and August, when the coast is at its busiest. The choice matters most in the shoulder months, when you can pick the place that fits and enjoy it without the crowds.

Beaches and swimming

Ölüdeniz has the better beach. The lagoon is a sheltered, shallow inlet behind a sand and shingle spit, and its water is calm enough for small children and nervous swimmers. It sits inside a protected nature area that charges its own entry at the gate, so check the current rate before you plan a full day. The open sea beach beside it has more wave and more people, and the whole strip fills by mid-morning in July and August.

Kaş has a different kind of swimming. The town has pebble coves, rocky shores and swimming platforms built over the water, with clear, deep sea and easy entry by ladder. That suits confident swimmers and snorkelers, and it suits people who dislike sand. If you want a classic sandy beach from a Kaş base, you drive or take a dolmuş west to Patara or stop at Kaputaş cove on the road to Kalkan. The Kalkan guide explains that stretch.

The choice is therefore simple. If sand and shallow water matter, especially with children, Ölüdeniz is the safer pick. If you prefer clear, deep water and quiet platforms, Kaş is stronger.

Activities: paragliding or diving

Ölüdeniz is built around the mountain. Babadağ gives you a cable car, a viewpoint and the launch for tandem paragliding, and the lagoon gives you a beach and boat departures. The cable car operator publishes its hours by month and a return fare of 950 TL for ages 7 and up, and the details are in things to do in Ölüdeniz. Flights and boats depend on wind and sea, so build in a spare day.

Kaş is built around the water and the coast. Diving is the main draw, with local dive centers running trips to sites along the coast, and boat trips to Kekova take in sunken ruins and a hilltop castle village. A short ferry crosses to the Greek island of Meis, which makes a day trip with a passport check. The coast road and the quiet bays suit kayaking, walking and slow days.

Paragliding fans should choose Ölüdeniz. Divers and boat people should choose Kaş. Anyone who likes both can split the trip, which the last section explains.

Ruins, passes and day trips

Both bases have ancient sites within reach, but they sit under different passes. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism lists the Aegean MuseumPass at €95 for 7 days, and its Muğla sites include Kayaköy, Tlos, Letoon, Pinara and Kaunos, all within reach of the Ölüdeniz and Fethiye area. The Mediterranean MuseumPass costs €90 for 7 days and lists Myra, Andriake, Simena, Patara, Xanthos and the St Nicholas museum, which sit along the Kaş side of the coast.

The Ministry lists Myra as open daily from 08:00 to 19:00, with ticket sales to 18:30, and the same hours apply at Patara. Check the Mediterranean MuseumPass page and the Aegean MuseumPass page for the full lists before you buy. A pass pays off only if you plan several sites within its validity, so count them first.

For ruins, Kaş is the stronger base, with Myra, Simena, Patara and Xanthos along its stretch. Ölüdeniz is the stronger base for a single, atmospheric site, Kayaköy, and for a day trip to Tlos. A traveler who wants history as much as beach will find more to do from Kaş, but may miss the lagoon and the cable car.

Evenings, atmosphere and who each suits

Ölüdeniz in the evening is a promenade of restaurants and bars beside the sea, lively in summer, quiet in spring and autumn, and easy for families. Hisarönü and Ovacık add choice nearby. If your evenings are mostly dinner and a stroll, it works well, and you can watch the paragliders land at the beach.

Kaş in the evening is a different mood: an old quarter of whitewashed houses, bougainvillea and small restaurants around a harbor, with a few bars and a relaxed pace. It suits couples and small groups who like to wander, and it has a more local feel than a resort strip. It is smaller, so the choice of places is narrower, but the setting is the draw.

Families with young children usually prefer Ölüdeniz for the calm beach. Couples and solo travelers often prefer Kaş for the atmosphere. Groups of friends who want nightlife are better served by Hisarönü near Ölüdeniz than by Kaş.

Budget and value

Neither base is cheap in July and August, and both are good value in May, June and October. As a rule of thumb, the beach strip at Ölüdeniz costs more per night than Hisarönü or Ovacık, so the cheapest way to stay near the lagoon is a hill base and a dolmuş ride. In Kaş, rooms in the old quarter carry a premium for the setting, while the quieter coves and the peninsula offer more space for the money. Food is cheaper at local restaurants away from the water in both places, and boat trips and flights are the big optional costs, so compare operators before you pay.

Quoted rates change with the calendar and the exchange rate, so this guide gives relative bands and no nightly prices. Check the total at booking, including breakfast, transfers and any local tax, and compare the cost of a rental car with the cost of repeated taxis if you plan many day trips.

Getting there and moving on

Ölüdeniz is the easier arrival. Dalaman airport is roughly an hour away by transfer, and the dolmuş route from Fethiye runs through the day. Kaş is farther: roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by transfer from either Dalaman or Antalya, which suits a road trip better than a short break. There is no rail on this coast, so the choice is a transfer, a bus or a rental car.

A one-way rental between Dalaman and Antalya lets you drive the whole coast without backtracking, and Ölüdeniz, Kalkan and Kaş sit on that route. Ask about drop-off fees and whether the contract allows unpaved roads. Use getting around to compare buses, transfers and cars. A short break of three or four days favors Ölüdeniz, since you lose less time on the road.

Season and crowds

Both bases are best in May, June, September and October, when the sea is warm and the streets are manageable. July and August are hot and busy in both, with the beach and the promenade at Ölüdeniz and the harbor and boats at Kaş at their fullest. Many boats and restaurants cut back from about November to March, and Kaş feels the winter more, since it is smaller. Ölüdeniz keeps its lower cable car running through winter on the operator's schedule.

If you travel in high summer, book early and choose the base that gives you a pool and a break at midday. If you travel in the shoulder months, you can choose purely by preference.

Splitting your stay

With a week, split the stay. Spend two or three nights in Ölüdeniz for the lagoon, a flight and Kayaköy, then drive east for two or three in Kaş for a Kekova boat day and the old town, with a night in Kalkan on the way if you want a quiet pause. The Turquoise Coast guide maps the route, and where to stay in Ölüdeniz helps with the first base.

Who should not split: anyone with only three or four days, since the transfer eats a day. In that case, pick one base and add day trips. Ölüdeniz suits a short beach break, and Kaş suits a slow, outdoorsy break with a couple of ruin days.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is choosing Kaş for a sandy beach holiday. The second is choosing Ölüdeniz for a quiet old town. The third is underestimating the transfer to Kaş and arriving after dark. The fourth is buying a MuseumPass for a beach trip, when the sites are the exception. The last is booking a flight, a boat day and a ruin day with no spare day for wind.

Before you go, check whether your passport needs a visa on the Türkiye e-Visa page, set up an eSIM for Türkiye, and consider travel insurance that covers boats, diving and paragliding if you plan them.
