Stay in Hualien city for a first visit, because trains, restaurants and the start of bus 310 are there. Choose Xincheng if you want to reach Taroko's visitor center early by bus 302, and the Qixingtan coast for slow sea-view stays. Gorge lodging is limited, so most visitors sleep in town and go in by day.

How to choose a base in Hualien
Most visitors come to Hualien for Taroko Gorge, so the question behind a search for a hotel is how to reach the gorge with the least friction. The Hualien travel guide lists the sights, and this page settles where to sleep as part of a wider Taiwan trip. The short answer is Hualien city for a first visit, Xincheng for an early start, and the Qixingtan coast for a slower stay.
Three facts from the park shape the choice. The Taroko National Park FAQ lists bus 310, a Taiwan Tourist Shuttle, running from Hualien through Qixingtan, Xincheng Railway Station and Chongde to the Taroko Visitor Center, about 1 hour 40 minutes one way. It lists bus 302 from Xincheng Train Station to the visitor center, about 8 minutes. And it says bus service between the visitor center and Tianxiang, deeper in the gorge, remains suspended after the 3 April 2024 earthquake.
That last point matters. With the upper gorge out of reach by bus, a day in Taroko by public transport is a day around the visitor center area, so a base close to that area saves time while a base in the city saves choice. The bus fare can be paid with EasyCard, iPASS, iCash or exact cash, since the park says the driver does not give change.
Price bands below are per night for a double room: $ is a simple hotel or guesthouse, $$ a mid-range hotel, $$$ an upscale property. They are rough guides, not quotes. Check the total price and the cancellation terms when you book.
1. Hualien city
Hualien city is the base that makes the rest of the east coast easier. It has the Taiwan Railways station, the airport bus, the widest choice of restaurants and the start of bus 310. The park's visitor center page also lists buses from Hualien Station toward Tianxiang that stop at the visitor center, so the city is the natural starting point if you are using public transport.
For the coast, Hualien Station is also where you take Hualien Bus 1140 or 1145 toward Shitiping, according to the Tourism Administration, and Qingshui Cliff lies along the Suao-Hualien Highway north of the city. That makes a three-day stay in town practical, with a different direction each day. See Taroko Gorge from Hualien for the gorge day.
The cost is time. At about 1 hour 40 minutes one way on bus 310, a gorge day from the city spends a large share of the day on the road, so an early start matters. If you want long hours at the visitor center and its nearby trails, Xincheng is the better choice.

Choose the city when dinners and trains matter more than an early start at the gorge.

2. Xincheng
Xincheng is the gorge gate. The park lists bus 302 from Xincheng Train Station to the Taroko Visitor Center in about 8 minutes, and a loop route, bus 302A, around Xincheng Old Street. Hualien Airport sits in Xincheng Township, according to the Tourism Administration, so the town is also practical on a flight day.
Staying here means you can reach the visitor center area early, walk the trails the park suggests for a half day, and still be back in town for dinner. The park's own half-day bus plan runs from the visitor center to the Dekalun Trail and then Xincheng Old Street, so a base in Xincheng puts you at both ends of the route. See the Taroko National Park page for the sites.
The trade-off is choice. Xincheng has fewer restaurants and less to do after dark than Hualien city. If you plan to be out until late, or to use Hualien as a hub for the coast, the city is the better base.

If long hours at the visitor center matter, stay here and accept quiet evenings

3. Qixingtan and the coast
The coast between Hualien and Xincheng suits travelers who want the Pacific as a backdrop. Bus 310 stops at Qixingtan Beach on its way to Xincheng, so you can reach both the city and the gorge side without a car. The Tourism Administration describes the East Coast National Scenic Area as stretching 170 kilometers down the coast from the Hualien River mouth, with sand and pebble beaches, reefs and capes, so a stay here fits the wider region.
The case for this base is atmosphere: sea air and a slower pace. The case against it is logistics. Meals and shops are spread out, buses run on timetables, and a late return from the city means a taxi. If you do not have a car or scooter, pick it only if you are happy to plan around bus 310.
Check the weather before you commit. GOV.UK says typhoon season normally runs from May to November, and a coast stay is more exposed to storms than a town hotel. A flexible rate is wise in those months.

Sleeping near the park and at altitude
Some visitors ask about sleeping closer to the gorge or higher up. The park site has pages for accommodation and camping, but the situation depends on road status and closures, so check the park before you plan an overnight inside. The FAQ's two-day Dali and Datong hiking route involves an overnight stay in Datong, which it says is arranged through the Tongli Tribe Natural Ecology Autonomy Association, and it recommends carrying enough food and water because there are no supply points along the trail.
For Mt Hehuan, the park suggests a night at a lodge near Guanyuan on Provincial Highway 8 or Songxue Lodge on Highway 14A, or at a stay near Qingjing Farm, and notes that staying overnight to adapt to altitude may help reduce the risk of altitude sickness. The Wuling viewing platform at 3,275 meters is listed as the highest highway point in Taiwan. Because Highway 8 has traffic control, check the monthly notice before you set the plan.
Arriving: how your route changes the choice
How you reach Hualien changes which base is easiest on the first night. The Tourism Administration lists Hualien Airport, in Jiali Village in Xincheng Township, with domestic flights to and from Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, and a Hualien Bus into the city center. If you fly in, Xincheng is the shortest hop and Hualien city is a bus ride. The high-speed rail line serves the west coast only, with its last station at Zuoying, so a trip from Taipei by rail uses Taiwan Railways on the east side, and the arrival point is Hualien Station or Xincheng Station.
That makes the station you arrive at part of the decision. If you step off at Hualien Station, you are already in the city base. If you want to get off earlier and be at the gorge gate, the park lists Xincheng Train Station as the stop for bus 302. Check the Taiwan Railways timetable and its ticketing rules for the train you want, especially for a weekend or holiday.
If you continue south after Hualien, the choice of final night matters. Staying in the city leaves you at the Hualien Station for a morning train, while Xincheng works for an early flight. For a longer east coast plan, the Eastern Taiwan and Taroko guide covers the wider region, and the Taitung travel guide covers the next base to the south.
Quick picks by traveler type
First-timers using public transport: Hualien city. Visitors who want the earliest gorge start: Xincheng. Couples and slow travelers with time to plan buses: the coast. Travelers on a flight day: Xincheng if the airport is the priority, Hualien city if the train matters more. Budget travelers should compare Hualien city guesthouses and business hotels first, then Xincheng.
Choosing by length of stay
One night works best in Xincheng or Hualien city, with the gorge on the morning after arrival. Two nights suit Hualien city, with a gorge day and a coast day. Three or more nights allow a change of base: two in the city, then one at the coast or a Mt Hehuan stay. If your trip also includes Taitung, read Hualien or Taitung before you decide where to spend the last night.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is booking a gorge-side hotel without checking which sites and roads are open. The second is choosing the coast without a plan for dinners and late buses. The third is treating Hualien city as close to Taroko: bus 310 takes about 1 hour 40 minutes one way. The fourth is booking on a non-refundable rate in typhoon season. The fifth is forgetting exact cash or a transit card for the bus.
Booking tips
Book earlier for long weekends and school holidays, when the Tourism Administration notes domestic flights are often fully booked. Check whether breakfast is included and whether the rate allows changes. For entry, GOV.UK says your passport must be valid for at least six months after you arrive, which the six-month passport rule page explains in general terms.
Set up your phone before you land. The eSIM guide compares plans, which helps with live park notices and bus times, and travel insurance is worth having for closures, delays and weather. Once your base is set, plan the day with Taroko Gorge from Hualien, and for onward routes see getting around Taiwan.
FAQ
What is the best area to stay in Hualien for Taroko?
Hualien city if you want trains, dinners and the start of bus 310, which reaches the Taroko Visitor Center in about 1 hour 40 minutes. Xincheng if you want to be at the gorge gate, since bus 302 takes about 8 minutes from Xincheng Station.
Is it better to stay in Hualien city or Xincheng?
Hualien city for choice and flexibility, Xincheng for an early start and a quieter evening. Xincheng also holds Hualien Airport, per the Tourism Administration, which helps on a flight day. Expect fewer restaurants there.
Can you stay inside Taroko Gorge?
The park lists accommodation and camping pages, but access depends on road status and closures after the 2024 earthquake. Check the park site before you plan to sleep inside, and keep a town hotel as the default.
Where should I stay if I want to see Mt Hehuan?
The park's FAQ recommends booking one night at a lodge near Guanyuan or Mt Hehuan, or a stay near Qingjing Farm, because a night at altitude may reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Check Provincial Highway 8 traffic control first.
How do I get from Hualien Airport to my hotel?
The Tourism Administration says a Hualien Bus runs from the airport to the city center, and taxis are available. If you sleep in Xincheng, the airport is in the same township, so the ride is short.
