El Castillo San Felipe

El Castillo San Felipe is a small 17th-century fortress on the seafront in Puerto de la Cruz, beside Playa Jardín.

El Castillo San Felipe is a small 17th-century fortress on the seafront in Puerto de la Cruz, beside Playa Jardín. Built to defend the town against pirate attacks, its dark volcanic stone and old cannons make a striking stop on a coastal walk. The fort now hosts art exhibitions and cultural events, so what you can see inside depends on what is on. From outside, you can look out over the beach and Atlantic Ocean, or continue along the promenade.

El Castillo San Felipe was built in 1604 to help defend Puerto de la Cruz against pirate attacks. The small fort stands beside Playa Jardín, where its dark volcanic stone contrasts with the beach below. It was one of the fortifications that protected the town’s coast.

The building later served other purposes, including as a hospital and a warehouse. It was declared a historic monument in 1949. Its former drawbridge has been replaced by a fixed path.

Exhibitions and the seafront

The fortress now functions as a cultural venue, with art exhibitions and events such as concerts. There is no permanent collection of historical displays, so the interior experience depends on the programme. Check for a current exhibition or event if that is your main reason for visiting.

Outside, the cannons are a reminder of the fort’s defensive past and a popular subject for photographs. The adjacent promenade gives you room to continue along the coast, with views of Playa Jardín and the Atlantic. The seaside setting is a good reason to include the fort in a walk, even when no event is taking place.
