Bodega La Geria

Bodega La Geria is a winery and wine bar on Carretera de La Geria, in Lanzarote’s main wine region.

Bodega La Geria is a winery and wine bar on Carretera de La Geria, in Lanzarote’s main wine region. Its vines grow in hollows dug into volcanic ground, with curved stone walls called zocos shielding them from the wind. Stop to see this distinctive vineyard landscape, browse the wine shop or sit outside with a glass and small snacks. You can also book a guided tour that explains local wine production and ends with a tasting; tastings have included three wines with cheese and tapas.

How the vines grow in La Geria

La Geria is Lanzarote’s best-known wine region, where grapevines grow in individual hollows dug into volcanic ground. The hollows are filled with picón, a porous volcanic ash that helps hold morning dew and conserve moisture in the soil. Low curved stone walls, called zocos, shield each vine from the valley’s prevailing winds.

The method gives the vineyards their distinctive pattern: dark ground, green vines and a separate stone shelter around each plant. The landscape formed after eruptions at Timanfaya between 1730 and 1736 spread volcanic ash across the valley.

Tours, tastings and the shop

A guided visit explains the island’s wine-growing conditions and the bodega’s production process. Tastings have included three wines served with cheese and tapas. If you prefer to set your own pace, you can stop for a glass in the bar or browse the shop’s selection of wines. Small snacks are also available.

The winery is housed in a whitewashed building of traditional Canarian architecture dating to the 19th century. Its position above the vineyards gives you a view across the dark volcanic ground and vine plots. There is indoor and outdoor seating.

Getting there

The bodega is on Carretera de La Geria, at kilometre 19. A large car park is available. If you plan to travel by taxi, arrange your return in advance, as pickup can take time. Choose a designated driver if you are tasting wine.
