Ljubljana in 2 days at a glance
Ljubljana rewards two days with a clear split: day one for the hill and the river, day two for the architect who shaped the center and for the parks. The Ljubljana travel guide explains the setting. If you are building a longer trip, the Slovenia guide shows how the capital fits with Bled, the caves and the coast.
The plan assumes you sleep in the Old Town or the center; the where to stay in Ljubljana guide compares the bases. It also assumes a warm-season visit with long days. In winter the same route works, but the castle closes earlier and the river cruise and parks matter less, so lean on the museums. Times are walking times and typical visit lengths, not guarantees, and the center is compact enough that you can swap morning and afternoon blocks freely.
Two facts shape the plan. The first is that Ljubljana Castle is open 365 days a year, which makes it the safe anchor on a day when museums are closed. The second is that a large part of the city center is closed to car traffic, so you can build the route entirely on foot, with a city bus as a backup for tired legs.
Day 1: the castle and the river
Start at the lower funicular station on Krek Square, opposite the Central Market, and ride up to the castle in the first hour it opens. The funicular and the castle both open at 9:00, and in the warm months the castle stays open until 20:00 (18:00 from October to April), so you can do the morning on the hill and still have the afternoon free. The castle site notes that the last ticket is sold one hour before closing. If you would rather walk, marked paths climb from Vodnikov Square, Stari Trg and Mestni Trg, and the castle site describes the funicular as the most comfortable route.
The castle ticket includes a return funicular journey, the viewing tower, the 4D film Virtual Castle, video mapping in the casemate, the Museum of Puppetry, the Slovenian History exhibition and the temporary exhibition halls. That is a full visit of about two hours if you take the tower and the exhibitions, less if you mainly want the view.
After the castle, walk down into the Old Town and let the lanes lead you to the river. The Ljubljanica is lined with café terraces, and its bridges, including the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge, are the picture-postcard views. The tourism board's own branding calls Ljubljana the city of dragons, and the dragon motif appears across the Old Town. Take a long lunch by the river, and avoid the busiest tables at the Triple Bridge if you want a quieter meal.
In the afternoon, take the river cruise, which is also included in the Ljubljana Card, or walk the embankments to the Central Market and the covered colonnade. The cruise gives a different angle on the bridges and is a good rest for your legs after the castle hill. End the day with dinner in the Old Town, then a stroll along the embankment when the lights come on.

Day 2: Plečnik and the parks
Day two follows the architect Jože Plečnik, whose work shaped the Ljubljana you see today. The tourism board describes his masterpieces as a land and water axis that forms part of UNESCO's World Heritage List. Start at the Triple Bridge and the Central Market colonnade along the river, which are free to walk and best in the morning light. From there, look for the National and University Library, whose main reading room is part of the tourism board's Plečnik tour, and follow the river upstream toward the quieter quarters.
If you want to go deeper, Plečnik House is the architect's own home and now a museum, in the Trnovo quarter. The Ljubljana Card page recommends calling ahead to book your tour slot, so do that on day one. The tourism board also sells a small-group tour called Master Builder Plečnik, a 3.5-hour walk that includes Plečnik House, the library reading room on certain days and a picnic in the garden; it lists the price as 166.82 EUR per person, runs Tuesday to Friday at 1 pm in Slovenian or English, and takes two to seven people. It suits architecture fans, not a quick overview.
Spend the afternoon in Tivoli Park, the large green area at the edge of the center, or at the Metelkova quarter near the station, which offers a different, alternative-culture side of the city. If you prefer a museum, the City Museum and the National Museum are listed as sales points for the Ljubljana Card and fill a slower afternoon.
Finish with a final walk on the embankments or a drink in one of the lanes of Krakovo or Trnovo. If you have an evening bus or train, collect your luggage from your hotel by 5 pm and use the city bus: a single fare is 1.50 EUR and covers up to 90 minutes, including transfers, with an Urbana card.
Is the Ljubljana Card worth it?
The card is a time-limited ticket that bundles entry to more than 30 attractions, including Ljubljana Castle, a river cruise, a guided city tour and unlimited city bus travel. Adults pay 41 EUR for 24 hours, 49 EUR for 48 hours and 54 EUR for 72 hours; a 24-hour children's card (ages 6 to 14) costs 26 EUR. The tourism board adds that children under 6 usually travel and enter free. The card activates on first use, each attraction can be entered once, and you must validate it on every bus ride.
Do the sum with the numbers that are fixed. The castle on its own costs 19 EUR with the funicular at the points of sale (17.10 EUR online). On a 24-hour card, that leaves 22 EUR of the 41 EUR to recover from the river cruise, the guided tour, museum entries and bus rides. On a 48-hour card, 30 EUR must come from other stops, and on a 72-hour card, 35 EUR. Check the current prices of each stop you actually plan to visit, because the card only wins when you use several paid items, not when you walk the free center.
The practical rule is simple. If your plan is the castle, the lanes, the market and the parks, skip the card and buy the castle ticket online. If you will add a river cruise, a guided tour, two museums and several bus rides inside 24 or 48 hours, the card is worth pricing. The card can be bought online as a QR code, which you can add to a digital wallet, or as a physical card at the tourist information centre, the airport, the castle funicular station and a few museums. Online purchases are digital only.
Two timing details help. The cable car to Velika Planina, a free card benefit, is closed for maintenance from 15 October to 15 November, so do not count on it in that window. And the card cannot be shared, so a couple needs two. For a broader look at the idea, are city passes worth it explains when bundled passes beat single tickets.
What to do in the rain
Ljubljana handles wet weather well because the castle ticket already includes indoor stops: the Museum of Puppetry, the Slovenian History exhibition, the exhibition halls and the 4D film. A drizzle morning at the castle is a better use of the ticket than a grey view from the tower, and the funicular keeps the climb dry. After lunch, add the National Museum or the City Museum, both of which sell the Ljubljana Card, and a covered stroll through the market colonnade.
Keep the river cruise and Tivoli Park for the drier slot, and move Plečnik House to the rainiest hour, since a guided tour is an indoor activity. If your day is fully wet, the Central Market area and its covered arcades are still pleasant for a coffee, and the city buses are a cheap way to cross town without getting soaked.
What is open and when
The tourist information centre on the river is open daily from June to September, from 8:00 to 19:00; from October to May it is open Monday to Saturday 9:00 to 18:00 and on Sundays and public holidays 9:00 to 17:00. The castle is open every day, but on 31 December the castle and funicular close at 5 pm and on 1 January they open at 10 am. Check hours for individual museums on their own sites, because they change with the season and some close on Mondays.
If your two days fall on a weekend, expect the river terraces to be busiest on Saturday evening, and book a table if you have a particular place in mind. ## A third day if you have one {#a-third-day}
A third day is where Ljubljana becomes a base. The classic choices are Lake Bled, Postojna Cave and the coast, and each needs most of a day. Day trips from Ljubljana compares them by distance, time on site and what to book ahead. If you are choosing one, the Lake Bled guide and the Koper guide show what each offers.
Pick by interests. Walkers and photographers choose Bled; cave lovers choose Postojna, where the tour is about an hour and a half and the cave stays at 10 degrees C all year; sea-and-old-town travelers choose Koper and Piran. The coast is about 100 km from Ljubljana and roughly an hour by road.
Getting around and getting there
Ljubljana Airport is about 26 km from the center, a drive of around 20 minutes, and a regular bus connects it with the central bus and railway station. Tickets are sold on board or at the airport stop machine. Shuttles and taxis also run. The Urbana card costs 2 EUR and holds up to 50 EUR in credit; a single bus fare is 1.50 EUR for up to 90 minutes. If you are arriving from outside the Schengen area, read EES explained and allow extra time at the border for registration.
Set up your phone before you land. An eSIM for Europe gives you data for the Urbana app, ticket QR codes and maps, and travel insurance covers medical care and cancellations if you add mountain trips later.
Mistakes to avoid
The first mistake is buying the card for a castle-only day. The second is walking up the castle hill at midday in July, when the hill has little shade: go first thing or ride the funicular. The third is leaving the Plečnik House tour to the last minute, because the tourism board recommends calling ahead. The fourth is trying to fit Bled into the same two days; the extra distance turns both days into transit. The last is forgetting that the center is largely car free: drop the rental car at the edge of town or skip it for the city days.
FAQ
Is 2 days enough for Ljubljana?
Yes. Two days cover the castle, the Old Town, the river, Plečnik's bridges and market colonnade, and one park or museum. A third day lets you add a Plečnik House tour or a day trip to Bled without rushing.
How much is Ljubljana Castle?
The castle site lists adults at 19 EUR with the funicular and 15 EUR without it at the points of sale, or 17.10 and 13.50 EUR online. Children 7 to 18, students and pensioners pay 13.50 EUR with the funicular.
Is the Ljubljana Card worth it?
Only if you add several paid stops to the castle. It costs 41 EUR for 24 hours, 49 EUR for 48 hours and 54 EUR for 72 hours and includes city buses, the castle and a river cruise. A castle-only day is cheaper without it.
What can you do in Ljubljana when it rains?
Move indoors: the castle exhibitions, the puppetry museum and the Slovenian History exhibition are in one ticket, and the city museums fill a wet afternoon. Keep the river cruise and the park for a drier slot.
Do you need to book Ljubljana sights ahead?
Buy castle tickets online at least a day ahead for the lower online price. The Ljubljana Card needs no booking for almost every sight, but the tourism board recommends calling ahead for Plečnik House tours.
