On the north side of Red Square, the State Historical Museum traces Russia’s past through archaeological finds, royal objects, manuscripts, weapons and works of art. Its collection spans from prehistoric times through the Romanov era, with displays arranged in richly decorated rooms whose designs change from gallery to gallery. The red-brick building, designed in the Russian Revival style, is a landmark in its own right. Many labels are in Russian, so an audio guide can help you follow the exhibits if you do not read the language.

A museum built for Russian history

State Historical Museum
State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum was established in 1872 to present the history of Russia. Its building was designed by Vladimir Sherwood in the Russian Revival style and opened to the public in 1883. The patterned red-brick exterior, towers and spires draw on older Russian architectural forms, making the museum a prominent part of Red Square’s ensemble.

Take time to look at the building from the square before going inside. Its exterior is part of the visit, and the richly decorated galleries continue the sense of period design within. The rooms are not all alike: their interiors draw on different historical styles and regions.

From prehistoric finds to royal collections

The museum’s collections cover Russian history from ancient times through the Romanov dynasty. Archaeological galleries include objects linked to prehistoric communities that lived in the territory of present-day Russia, such as tools, weapons and ornaments. Other displays bring together traditional clothing and handicrafts, paintings, manuscripts, ceramics, coins and decorative arts.

Among the objects associated with the royal court are works by court jewellers and items collected by members of the Romanov family. The holdings also include ancient Russian painting and books. With so many periods and types of material represented, the museum gives you a broad view of the country’s past rather than focusing on a single era.

Finding your way through the galleries

The displays are arranged across several floors, and the rooms have distinct themes and decoration. Moving through them lets you see how the collection ranges from early archaeological material to later chapters in Russian history. Some descriptions are available in English, but much of the exhibition text is in Russian.

If you do not read Russian, consider using an audio guide to add context as you go. The scale of the collection can make it hard to take in every object during one visit, so choose the periods or subjects that interest you most. Allow around two to three hours for a visit, with extra time if you want to explore the galleries at a slower pace.
