En bref

Take the CP Sintra line from Lisbon, ride Scotturb bus 434 up the hill, and build the day around Pena plus one more site, such as the Moorish Castle or the National Palace of Sintra. Adult tickets are 12 euros for the castle, 13 for the National Palace essential visit, 20 for Pena's Essential Visit and 45 for the Complete Visit. Sites close for lunch at the ticket office, so plan around it.

Is Sintra a good day trip from Lisbon?

Yes, if you accept a limit. Sintra is the classic day trip from the capital, and the Sintra travel guide lays out the sites, but a single day holds two sites well and three badly. The hills are steep, buses queue, and several ticket offices close for lunch. A day built around Pena plus one more site, with a quiet lunch and a plan for rain, beats a rushed run through everything. For the wider trip, the Portugal guide shows where Sintra sits between Lisbon, Cascais and the north.

The decision that shapes the day is which sites you choose, because the park authority runs several of them with different hours, different ticket rules and different walking distances. The sections below set out the transport, a table of the main sites with checked adult prices and hours, a route that fits a day, and the cases where a day trip is the wrong tool.

Getting from Lisbon to Sintra

The park authority lists the CP Sintra line as the way in from Lisbon, with departures from Oriente, Rossio and Entrecampos stations. The line runs through suburbs, so the journey is a commuter-style ride rather than a scenic one. Timetables and fares change, so check the CP site for your date and buy your ticket at the station or in the app. If you land in Lisbon on a long-haul flight the same day, read EES explained first, because border registration can slow your arrival and push the train later.

From Sintra station, the park authority lists Scotturb bus 434 as the link to Pena and the Moorish Castle, and buses 434 and 435 as the link to the National Palace of Sintra in the historic center. It also lists a walk from the station to the National Palace at 10 to 15 minutes. Carris Metropolitana bus 1253 serves the road toward Monserrate, the Capuchos convent, Cabo da Roca and Peninha. Bus fares were not verified, so check the operator.

The authority is explicit about cars. Private vehicles are not authorized to reach Pena or the Moorish Castle, and driving in the historic center is limited to residents, with peripheral car parks listed for those who bring a car. A rental car therefore buys little for a first day trip. Take the train from Lisbon, and use the bus and your feet on the hill.

Pick your sites: prices and hours

The table lists the main sites with adult ticket prices and hours as the park authority lists them. Children, youths and seniors have lower prices on the official page, and families have a combined ticket.

The park authority says that the Moorish Castle, the National Palace of Sintra, Monserrate and several others close their ticket offices from noon to 1 p.m., with automatic ticket machines still available. The Pena palace is sold by date and time, and its Complete Visit page lists slots from 11:15 a.m. through 5 p.m. Pena's Essential Visit is a self-guided route through the New Palace, with the Terraces and the park. The Complete Visit adds the Private Apartments and runs for a maximum of 20 people. The Pena Palace tickets compared page walks through which one fits which traveler.

Two money rules matter for a day plan. First, buying tickets for more than one site in the same order earns a discount: 5% for two sites, 6% for three, 7% for four, 8% for five and 10% for six. Second, tickets are for a chosen date, and online purchases can be rescheduled within a year, while paper tickets from a ticket office cannot be changed. All of these figures come from the official pages, and you should check them for your date before you pay.

A one-day route that works

The simplest route puts the hill first and the town second, because the hill is the part that needs a timed slot and clear weather. Take an early CP train from Lisbon, aiming to reach Sintra before the groups. Ride bus 434 to the Pena area and use the park authority's gate hours as your guide: the park opens at 9:00 and the palace at 9:30, with palace slots listed through the day.

If you hold a Complete Visit slot, build the morning around it, and arrive at the main entrance of the park ahead of your time. The Essential Visit is self-guided and needs less ceremony, so it is the easier choice for a day trip with a tight timetable. Leave time for the walk from the park entrance to the palace, which is steep, or add the small transfer, which the authority lists at 4.50 euros round trip as an add-on to a Pena ticket.

For the second site, choose by interest and energy. The Moorish Castle is close to Pena by bus and a lighter visit, and the National Palace of Sintra sits in the historic center, which makes it a natural afternoon after a lunch in the lanes. The castle's ticket office closes from noon to 1 p.m., so buy online or from the machine if you arrive then. If you choose the National Palace, remember the lunch gap and the last entry at 5:30 p.m.

Plan your lunch around those gaps rather than fighting them. A late lunch in the historic center after the hill gives you a sit-down, a cool room in summer and time for the bus queue to shrink. Then walk the lanes, visit the National Palace if you chose it, and take bus 434 or 435 or the walk back to the station. Keep a margin before the train you plan to catch, since the last service back is what sets your real finish time.

A guided day tour is not necessary for most travelers. The train and bus are simple, and the sites sell tickets online. A tour suits travelers with limited mobility, a very short stay or no wish to plan, and it costs more than doing it yourself. If you do not fit those, skip it and spend the difference on lunch or a second site.

Rain, fog and heat: the backup plan

Sintra's hills hold cloud, and a day that starts clear can turn misty within hours. Pena's views depend on that, so check the forecast the evening before and keep a backup. In rain or low cloud, move the day indoors: the interiors of Pena and the National Palace of Sintra work in any weather, while the Moorish Castle walls and the forest paths lose their views and become slippery. If the forecast is poor for the whole day, consider moving the trip, or swap to another Lisbon day trip, such as the walled city described in the Évora travel guide or the seaside town of Cascais.

In summer heat, reverse the logic. Start with outdoor sites early, take shade and water, and keep indoor rooms for the middle of the day. The hills are cooler than the city, but stone steps and exposed walls bake in the afternoon.

Who should skip a Sintra day trip

Travelers with limited mobility should think twice about a single-day push. The hills, steps and uneven stone are demanding, and the park authority lists accessibility information for each monument. If mobility is a concern, choose one site and one clear route, and check the accessibility page before you go.

Travelers who dislike crowds should also reconsider July and August, when day groups fill the buses and the historic center by midday. Spring and autumn are calmer, and an overnight stay lets you start before the groups arrive, which the where to stay in Sintra page compares by base. If your time in Lisbon is only two days, spend one on Sintra and one on the capital rather than trying to compress both.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is trying to see Pena, the Moorish Castle, the National Palace and Monserrate in one day. The second is arriving at Pena without a palace slot and finding the interior sold for the day. The third is planning a lunch that collides with the noon to 1 p.m. ticket office closure. The fourth is hiking up in sandals or wet-weather shoes with no grip. The fifth is leaving the station with no plan for the last train back.

Before you go

On a day trip the useful extras are a charged phone and a saved ticket code: an eSIM for Portugal covers bus apps and maps, and travel insurance covers a slip on a wet path. FAQ

How do you get from Lisbon to Sintra?

By CP train on the Sintra line from Rossio, Entrecampos or Oriente, according to the park authority. From Sintra station, Scotturb bus 434 serves Pena and the Moorish Castle. Check the CP timetable for your date.

How many sites can you see in one day in Sintra?

Two is realistic, three is a stretch. Pena plus the Moorish Castle or the National Palace of Sintra fits a long day. Monserrate, the Capuchos convent and Cabo da Roca need a second day or a car.

Should you book Sintra tickets in advance?

Pena's palace interior is sold for a set date and time, so book it ahead on the Parques de Sintra site. For other sites, buying online skips the ticket office queue, and buying several sites together earns a discount of 5% to 10%.

Can you drive to Pena Palace?

No. The park authority says private cars are not authorized to reach Pena or the Moorish Castle, and driving in the historic center is limited to residents. Use the train, the bus or a marked trail, or park in a peripheral car park.

Is Sintra worth it in the rain?

Indoors, yes: the National Palace of Sintra and the Pena interior work in the wet. Skip the Moorish Castle walls and forest paths in heavy rain or fog, since views vanish and stone steps are slippery.
