Playa Gaviota Azul, also called Playa Fórum, is a public beach in Punta Cancún, at about km 9.5 of the Hotel Zone. Its soft white sand and turquoise water draw swimmers, sunbathers and people heading to the nearby clubs, including Coco Bongo. A breakwater shelters part of the shore, where the water can be calm and shallow; elsewhere, waves are stronger and conditions can change. Come for a swim, beach photos or a lively spot close to Cancún’s nightlife. There is little shade, so bring an umbrella or rent one nearby.

Finding the beach

Playa Gaviota Azul

Playa Gaviota Azul sits in Punta Cancún on the Caribbean side of the Hotel Zone, around km 9.5. It is also known as Playa Fórum, Forum Beach and, locally, City Beach. The entrance can be easy to miss: look for the walkway beside Coco Bongo and Forum By The Sea. Hotel Zone buses and taxis serve the area, but parking is limited.

Swimming and waves

A line of concrete breakwater blocks protects part of the shore and can leave the water calmer for swimming and snorkelling. Conditions are not the same along the entire beach. Sections facing the open Caribbean can have stronger waves and undertow, and winds can make the surf larger. Check the warning flags before entering the water. When the waves pick up, local surfers use the beach; surfing lessons are offered by 360 Surf School.

A busy stretch of the Hotel Zone

The beach is close to Coco Bongo, Mandala and other nightlife venues, as well as restaurants and convenience stores. That location brings a lively atmosphere, particularly on weekends, and the shore can get crowded. If you want more space, go on a weekday or early in the day. The beach is a public place, while loungers and services at private beach clubs may require payment.

Shade and facilities

There are no shaded areas on the beach, and public washrooms and showers are not available there. Bring an umbrella or rent one from vendors. A private washroom nearby may be available for a fee. The sand and sea make a straightforward beach stop, but plan ahead if you need facilities or a place to sit.
