The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a 37.2 km crossing of the Northern Japan Alps by cable car, bus, ropeway and tunnel bus, listed as open from 15 April to 30 November in 2026. Allow 7 to 8 hours end to end, buy a web ticket with a boarding time when you can, and choose your direction by where you sleep next.
What the Alpine Route is and when it runs
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a mountain crossing in central Japan, not a single ride. According to the route's own site, it spans 37.2 km across the Northern Japan Alps with a maximum elevation difference of 1,975 meters, almost all of it inside Chubu Sangaku National Park, and it links Toyama on the Sea of Japan side with Nagano prefecture on the other. It is one of the highlights of the Central Honshū travel guide, and a strong alternative to the Takayama bus in a Tokyo to Kyoto route over the Alps.
The season is the first thing to check. The official site lists operation from 15 April to 30 November in 2026, and individual timetables change within that window. A separate timetable for the bus to Shomyo Falls runs on its own dates, and the site lists period-specific timetables as PDFs. Outside the season, the high sections are closed, so a trip planned for December to early April has to use another route.
Read the official Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route site for the current timetable, since dates change each year.
The legs in order
The crossing links seven transport legs, and the route's transportation page gives the time, distance and elevation change for each. From the Toyama side, you start with the Toyama Chihou Railway from Dentetsu Toyama to Tateyama Station, 34 km in 65 minutes. The Tateyama Cable Car climbs 502 m in 7 minutes over 1.3 km at an average gradient of 24 degrees. The Tateyama Highland Bus runs 23 km from Bijodaira to Murodo in 50 minutes, with optional stops at Midagahara or Tengudaira, where a reservation is needed to board again.
At Murodo, the Tateyama Tunnel Electric Bus runs 3.7 km through the heart of Mt Tateyama in 10 minutes, and the route calls it the highest-altitude electric bus in Japan at 2,450 m. The Tateyama Ropeway takes 7 minutes over 1.7 km from Daikanbo to Kurobedaira and is described as the only ropeway in Japan without pylons along its span. The Kurobe Cable Car, an underground line, takes 5 minutes over 0.8 km to Kurobeko, which the fare page lists with Kurobe Dam. The last leg is the Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus from Kurobe Dam to Ogizawa, 6.1 km in 16 minutes across the border between Toyama and Nagano.

Add the legs and you get roughly 2 hours 40 minutes of moving time. The route itself lists 7 to 8 hours for a one-way trip from Dentetsu Toyama to Ogizawa, because transfers, waits, viewpoints and the walk between Kurobeko and the dam take the rest. Plan the whole window, and do not book a tight connection at the end. For the connection between Kurobeko and the Kanden bus, check the route's pages for the current walking time and conditions.
Tickets and fares
There are three kinds of ticket on the official site. The web ticket lets you buy and reserve a boarding time at once. The Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass combines JR train tickets with Alpine Route transport and is sold through the area pass site. Same-day tickets are sold even when advance tickets are sold out. A news item from 18 September 2026 also advises travelers to keep checking the web ticket site if their date shows as full, since reservations can reopen.
Same-day tickets are the safety net. The route lists main fares at its ticket offices: Dentetsu Toyama to Ogizawa one way is 12,360 yen, a Dentetsu Toyama to Murodo round trip is 10,220 yen, and a Dentetsu Toyama to Kurobeko round trip is 19,320 yen. From Tateyama Station, a one-way ticket to Ogizawa is 10,940 yen and a Murodo round trip is 7,380 yen. From Ogizawa, a ticket to Dentetsu Toyama is 12,360 yen and a Murodo round trip is 12,300 yen. Children are 6 to 11 and adults 12 and over, per the fare page, and fares are subject to change.
The ticket offices open at set times. The Dentetsu Toyama office sells from 7:30 to 11:00, though it may open at 5:00 on some days, while Tateyama Station opens 20 minutes before the first service and Ogizawa 40 minutes before. Payment is by cash or credit card. If you will start early, buy ahead on the web.

Which direction should you go?
The two directions use the same legs, so choose by your onward route. Starting on the Toyama side ends at Ogizawa, where a local bus runs to Shinano Omachi in 40 minutes and an express bus runs to Nagano Station in 100 minutes, according to the route's transportation page. That suits a trip that continues to Matsumoto, Nagano or the Kamikochi area. Starting from Nagano or Shinano Omachi ends in Toyama, which suits a trip that continues to Kanazawa or Takayama, since JNTO lists Takayama at about 1 hour 30 minutes from Toyama and the Hokuriku Shinkansen continues from Toyama to Kanazawa.
A second consideration is the day's start. The Toyama side begins with a 65-minute train, so you need to be at Dentetsu Toyama early. The Nagano side begins with the 100-minute express bus from Nagano to Ogizawa, or the 40-minute local bus from Shinano Omachi, and then a first-leg ticket gate. If you hold a boarding time for the first leg, plan the connection with room to spare.
If you would rather skip the crossing, a return trip from Toyama to Murodo, listed at 7 to 8 hours, gives the high-altitude scenery without the dam and the second half. A return from Tateyama Station to Murodo is listed at 5 to 6 hours. See where to base in Central Honshū for the towns at each end.
Luggage forwarding
Bags do not belong on a day like this, and the route runs its own baggage forwarding on set pairs of stations. The baggage page lists Dentetsu Toyama Station to Shinano Omachi Station or Omachi hot spring hotels, and the reverse, at 4,000 yen per item including tax. Dentetsu Toyama Station to hotels near Tateyama Station, and Shinano Omachi Station to Omachi hot spring, are 2,000 yen per item. Payment is cash only.
Drop-off windows are fixed. At Dentetsu Toyama Station, bags are received from 5:00 to 10:00, with two reception areas used before and after 9:00 between 15 April and 31 May, and pick-up runs from 15:30 to 18:00. At Shinano Omachi Station, receiving runs 7:40 to 10:30 and pick-up 15:00 to 17:45. The page excludes cash, valuables and fragile items, and warns that severe weather or road conditions can delay or suspend the service. Pack a day bag with water, layers, a rain jacket and any medication.
Altitude, weather and rules
The elevation difference is up to about 2,000 m, and the route's rules page warns that some visitors feel headaches or ringing in the ears. If you feel unwell, tell a staff member. Bring layers, because temperatures change fast between the valley and Murodo, and plan for cloud, which can hide the view even on a fine day. The route also posts a live camera, which helps you decide before you set out.
The rules are plain. Walk only on designated paths, do not collect plants, take your litter, use only the toilets provided, and do not bring pets or fly drones. Some vehicles and facilities are not barrier-free, so travelers using wheelchairs need assistance from a companion or staff. Hikers on the ridgelines must submit a hike plan and use designated camping sites. The insurance angle matters too: read insurance for hiking above 3,000 m if you plan to leave the paved routes.
Who should skip the crossing
Skip it if your dates fall outside the season, or if the forecast is poor, because the view is the point. Skip the full crossing if you have only a few hours; the Murodo return gives the best high-altitude scenery in half the time. Skip it if you have a fixed train or flight that evening, since a delay anywhere along seven legs puts the connection at risk. And skip it if altitude symptoms would spoil the day: the cable car and bus climb quickly.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is treating it as a two-hour ride and booking a late-afternoon train. The second is arriving at an early boarding time with no ticket, in a peak week when same-day sales may be restricted. The third is leaving baggage with you on a day with several transfers. The fourth is forgetting layers. The fifth is stopping at Midagahara or Tengudaira without reserving the next bus, since the route says a reservation is required at each station to board again.
Set up data before you leave, because the live camera and operation notices are online. The best eSIM for Japan guide compares plans. If your plan sits near other mountain days, see Kamikochi as a day trip, and for cost across the trip, the JR Pass guide helps you decide whether a pass makes sense.
