Inside Siena Cathedral, the Piccolomini Library is a Renaissance room commissioned in 1492 by Cardinal Francesco Piccolomini to preserve the books of his uncle, Pope Pius II. Its vivid frescoes by Pinturicchio cover the walls and ceiling, with ten scenes tracing the pope’s life. Look closely at the gold details and the painted landscapes, ships and formal dress. The library is reached from a small entrance along the cathedral’s left aisle, so it is easy to pass if you are focused on the nave.
A library for Pope Pius II’s books

Cardinal Francesco Piccolomini commissioned the library in 1492 to preserve the collection of his uncle, Pope Pius II, who died in 1464. The cardinal later became Pope Pius III. The room was conceived as a place for the pope’s valuable books and illuminated manuscripts, though one account notes that the collection was never stored there.
The entrance is inside Siena Cathedral, along the left aisle. Look for the small doorway as you make your way through the church; the library is a separate, richly decorated space within the cathedral.
Pinturicchio’s scenes and ceiling

Pinturicchio painted the library’s frescoes between 1503 and 1508. The cycle presents ten episodes from the life of Pope Pius II, whose birth name was Enea Silvio Piccolomini. Each scene is framed like a window, with carefully rendered figures, buildings and landscapes. Ships, fortified towns, elaborate clothing, flowers and stormy skies appear among the details.
The decoration extends across the ceiling, where gold adds brightness to the room. Step through at a measured pace and look both around and overhead; the one-way route means you continue forward rather than returning through the entrance.
The Piccolomini altar
Near the library entrance stands the Piccolomini altar, made by Lombard sculptor Andrea Bregno in 1483. Four figures in the lower niches are sculptures by the young Michelangelo, created between 1501 and 1504: Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Gregory and Saint Pius. An assistant helped with the Saint Gregory figure.
Above them is a Madonna and Child, attributed to Jacopo della Quercia. The altar provides another point of interest before you enter or as you leave the frescoed room.
