Trim Castle

Trim Castle occupies the south bank of the River Boyne in the town of Trim. Hugh de Lacy established a defensive site here in the 12th century, and his son Walter continued the work. Construction took roughly 30 years. The castle became the centre of Norman administration in the Lordship of Meath.

The present stone complex grew from an earlier defensive structure on the site. Its central keep is distinctive for its cruciform plan, and the enclosure walls give the grounds their imposing scale. The castle covers about 30,000 square metres.

A walk around the grounds gives you time to view the keep and surrounding walls from different angles. Information boards explain the structures, so a self-guided visit can add context to what you see. The grounds are free to explore.

A guided visit takes you inside the keep, where the castle’s development and history are explained. The route climbs narrow, steep stairs, and the upper level gives views over Trim. Visitors with restricted mobility, or families with very young children, should consider the stairs before choosing the interior tour.
