The palace was founded in 1757 by Raden Mas Said. That year he signed a treaty with the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and under it he became ruler of part of Eastern Mataram. He took the name Mangkunegara I, and the palace of the Mangkunegaran rulers dates from this start.

Today the palace is still the home of the family and a cultural center. It sits in the center of Solo, just minutes from the main Keraton.

The first thing you reach is the grand pendopo, an open pavilion with towering pillars and intricate carvings. The carvings reflect the skill of Javanese craftsmanship.

Across the complex, Javanese and European styles mix in one design, which gives the palace a look that is different from many other royal buildings in Solo.

Inside the tour and the museum

A visit usually includes a guided tour of about an hour. The guides share insight into the culture and history of the palace.

Some areas are closed to visitors because they are private royal spaces, so the tour does not cover every room.

The museum sits inside the palace complex. It holds historical objects collected since 1926 and opened to the public in 1968. It is managed by Pariwisata Mangkunegaran.
