En bref

Stay on the East Strip for a first trip: it is near the harbor, the dive shops and the restaurants. Choose the North End for space and quiet, the West Coast for sunsets and a slower pace, and the Inland village for lower prices and longer stays. Book ahead for July and August and for the holiday weeks, and carry cash for small hotels.

How to choose

Gili Trawangan is small, but where you sleep still changes your trip. The Gili Trawangan travel guide covers what to do, and this page settles where to base. The island has no cars, so your base decides how far you walk or cycle to the harbor, to dinner and to a swim. For the wider picture of the country, see the Indonesia guide.

Three questions narrow the choice. Do you want music and restaurants at the door, or silence after dark? Is a swim from the beach in front of you a priority, or are you happy to walk to it? And are you here for three nights or for three weeks? Fast-boat arrivals land at the harbor on the east coast, so the farther you stay from it, the more you rely on a cidomo horse cart or a bicycle with your luggage.

Prices are shown as relative bands: $ for budget, $$ for mid-range and $$$ for upscale. They compare areas with each other rather than quote nightly rates. The calendar moves them more than the area: July and August and the end-of-year holidays are dearest, and the wet months are cheaper but can cancel boats. If your dates include a flight home, keep a spare night, and read our guide on how to get to Gili Trawangan before you book.

1. The East Strip

The East Strip is the stretch of road and beach on the east coast, where the fast boats land. The harbor, the night market, dive shops and most restaurants and bars sit within a short walk, and you can snorkel from the beach in front of many hotels. For a first visit or a short stay, it is the simplest base.

You trade peace for convenience. On busy nights, music and voices carry late along the front, and cidomo carts pass along the road at all hours. Ask for a room at the back of the property or a few lanes inland from the bars, and bring earplugs. The beach here is also the island's working front, with boats and swimmers sharing the water, so snorkel with a buoy line or a guide and keep an eye on boat traffic.

If you are doing a dive course, this is also the easiest place to be, since the dive shops open early and the briefings are a short walk away. A room with a fan or air conditioning matters more here than a view, because the island is hot and humid and a good night's sleep is the point.

À éviter si you want silence after 10pm or a wide empty beach. The North End or the West Coast suits you better.

If you’re weighing comfort against location, this four-star option is 1.3 km from the East Strip centre

2. North End

Best for
Couples, long stays
Noise
Quiet

About 10–15 min by bicycle

The North End is the quieter top of the island, with wider beaches and a scattering of resorts and villa-style stays. Mornings are calm, the water in front is often good for a swim, and the evenings are slow. It is the best base for couples and for anyone who plans a week or more on the island.

The cost is distance. The restaurant strip is a bicycle ride or a cart away, and at night the lanes are dark and quiet, so carry a light. Many properties have their own restaurant, which helps, but menus can be short and prices high. Check what meals are included, and whether the hotel provides bicycles.

This is a good place to book a longer stay, because you can combine quiet days with an evening ride into town. It is a poor choice if you want to walk to a late dinner or arrive and leave in a day.

À éviter si you want to walk to dinner and the dive shops. The East Strip suits you better.

3. West Coast

Best for
Sunsets, slower evenings
Noise
Moderate

The West Coast faces the open sea, which makes it the sunset side of the island. Relaxed bars and cafés line parts of the shore, with swings and beanbags, and rooms are often a little cheaper than on the harbor side. It feels more local and less rushed than the strip, and the walk back to the harbor is still manageable.

The water here is rougher and can be shallow over coral, so it is better for a sunset drink than for a long swim. If swimming is your priority, walk to the east side in the morning, or choose a hotel with a pool. Ask about current conditions before you swim, and wear shoes on the reef shelf.

Evenings are lively in places but wind down earlier than on the East Strip. That makes this side a good compromise for travelers who want sunsets and a drink without a late-night soundtrack.

À éviter si you want the calmest swimming water or a restaurant at the door. The East Strip or the North End suits you better.

Stay here when you want sunsets and a drink without a late-night soundtrack.

4. Inland and the Village

Best for
Budget, families, long stays
Noise
Quiet

About 10 min by bicycle
Price band

Behind the beach, lanes run through the local village and past guesthouses, villas and small family hotels. Rooms here cost less than on the shore, many include a kitchen or a pool, and you see more of daily life on the island, with mosques, shops and cafés beyond the tourist strip.

The sea is not at your door, so factor in a short ride for every swim and every sunset. The lanes are narrow and unlit in places, so a bicycle light is useful. This is a good base for families, budget travelers and anyone who wants a long stay without paying for beachfront.

Respect local customs in the village. Dress modestly away from the beach, and keep noise down at night. The call to prayer is part of the soundtrack here, so a room near a mosque may not suit light sleepers.

À éviter si you want to step from your room to the beach. The East Strip, the North End or the West Coast suits you better.

Which base suits which trip?

Match the base to the trip you are taking. A first visit with a dive course or a snorkel day fits the East Strip. A honeymoon or a quiet week fits the North End. Sunset lovers who want a slower evening do well on the West Coast, and budget travelers or families staying a week or more should look at the village.

If you are still deciding between islands, compare them first. Gili Trawangan is the busiest and has the most choice, Gili Meno is the quiet one, and Gili Air sits in the middle. Our guide to Gili T, Air or Meno sets out the trade-offs, and splitting a stay across two islands costs only a short boat hop.

What should you check before you book?

Island rooms differ from mainland ones, so check a few basics. Ask whether the room has air conditioning or a fan, and whether it has a mosquito net or screens. Ask what the water is like: tap water on the island is brackish, so showers can feel salty, and drinking water comes in bottles or refill stations. Ask about backup power, because small islands can have outages, and check that the Wi-Fi is good enough if you need to work.

Check how you will carry your luggage from the harbor. Most hotels arrange a cidomo cart, and some send a porter, but a few expect you to walk. If you arrive late, confirm that someone will meet you. Finally, check the cancellation terms. Fast boats can be delayed or canceled in rough weather, and a refundable rate is worth a small premium.

Booking tips

Book early for July and August and for the end-of-year holidays, when boats and rooms fill. In the wet months, from roughly December to March, you can often choose on arrival, but keep a spare night at the end of the trip in case the sea is rough. If you cannot decide between areas, book the first night on the East Strip, then move if you prefer quiet.

Carry cash. Many small hotels, bike stalls and cafés prefer rupiah, and ATMs can run out. Check our travel insurance page for cover that includes boat delays, snorkeling and medical help, since the nearest large hospital is on the mainland. An eSIM helps you check boat times and confirmations from the harbor, and our getting around Indonesia page covers flights and ferries to Bali and Lombok.

Before you fly, check the Bali tourist levy and e-VoA page if you arrive through Bali, and see Lombok if you plan to explore the mainland. With the right base and a spare night, Gili Trawangan is an easy island to enjoy.

FAQ

What is the best area to stay on Gili Trawangan?

The East Strip for most first trips. It is near the harbor, the dive shops and the restaurants, and you can snorkel from the beach in front. Choose the North End or West Coast if you want a calmer evening.

Is Gili Trawangan too noisy to sleep?

Only in a short stretch of the east coast on busy nights. The north, west and inland areas are much quieter, and a room a few lanes back from the bars usually solves it.

Can you walk everywhere on Gili Trawangan?

Yes, but the island is a loop of several kilometers, so distances add up in the heat. Walking, bicycles and cidomo horse carts are the only transport, and no motor vehicles are allowed.

Do hotels on Gili Trawangan take cards?

Some do, but many small places prefer cash or add a fee for cards. Bring rupiah from Bali or Lombok, because island ATMs can run out of notes.

When should I book a room on Gili Trawangan?

As soon as your dates are firm for July and August and for the end-of-year holidays. In the wet months you can often choose on arrival, but boats can be canceled, so keep a spare night.
