Victoria Memorial is a marble museum and landmark on the Maidan in Kolkata, built in memory of Queen Victoria.

Victoria Memorial is a marble museum and landmark on the Maidan in Kolkata, built in memory of Queen Victoria. Its Indo-Saracenic design combines British and Mughal elements with Venetian, Egyptian and Deccani influences, crowned by the rotating Angel of Victory. Inside, galleries trace Kolkata’s colonial-era history through paintings, sculptures, weapons, coins and maps. The surrounding gardens, ponds and fountains add space for a quiet walk and views of the building from different angles. Allow time for both the museum and the grounds.

A memorial built for Queen Victoria

Victoria Memorial was commissioned by Lord Curzon, then Viceroy of India, after Queen Victoria died in 1901. Construction began in 1906, and the building opened to the public in 1921. By then, the capital of British India had moved from Calcutta to Delhi.

The memorial was conceived as more than a monument: Curzon wanted a museum and gardens that would preserve material about the past. Today, the building serves as a museum and cultural institution, set on the Maidan in central Kolkata.

Marble and architectural influences

The building is made of white Makrana marble, quarried in Rajasthan. British architect William Emerson designed it in the Indo-Saracenic style, drawing on several traditions. British and Mughal elements sit alongside Venetian, Egyptian and Deccani influences. The dome, arches and other details reward a closer look as well as views from across the grounds.

A rotating Angel of Victory stands above the main dome. From outside, reflecting ponds provide views of the marble structure, while paths and lawns give visitors space to walk around it. The gardens were designed by Lord Redesdale and David Prain.

Galleries and collections

The museum has 25 galleries, with collections spanning paintings, sculpture, books, manuscripts, arms and ammunition, coins, maps and historical objects. Together, they cover the British period in India and Kolkata’s history. The Calcutta Gallery focuses on the city’s past, while the Queen’s Gallery contains portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, alongside works by Frank Salisbury.

The art collection includes paintings by Bengal School artists Abanindranath Tagore, Gaganendranath Tagore and Jamini Roy. The galleries also hold rare books, photographs, textiles and miniatures. If you are particularly interested in the collection, leave enough time to explore the museum as well as the grounds.
