On the quayside at 4 Quai de l'Amiral Courbet, Chapelle Saint-Pierre is a small chapel dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen. Jean Cocteau decorated its interior with wall paintings about Saint Peter and Villefranche’s fishing community, giving the former fishermen’s storehouse a close link to the town’s maritime life. Step inside to see the murals across the walls and ceiling; the visit is brief, and the quiet interior also offers shelter from the heat. Photography is not allowed, so take time to look around rather than prepare your camera.
A chapel shaped by fishing life

Chapelle Saint-Pierre stands on Villefranche-sur-Mer’s harbour at 4 Quai de l'Amiral Courbet. Dedicated to Saint Peter, patron saint of fishermen, it has long been associated with the town’s fishing community. After serving as a place of worship, the small chapel was used by local fishermen to store nets and other equipment during much of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
In 1957, Jean Cocteau helped restore the chapel and decorated its interior. His wall paintings bring together scenes from the life of Saint Peter and images of local fishermen, connecting the chapel’s religious purpose with the work carried out along the harbour.
Inside the chapel

Cocteau’s paintings cover the walls and ceiling. Their chalk-like linework makes the small interior feel distinct from the chapel’s modest waterfront exterior. The murals are the main reason to step inside, and the compact space means you can see them during a short visit.
Photography is prohibited inside. The chapel is open Wednesday through Sunday from 2 to 6 pm and closed on Monday and Tuesday. Bring cash for entry. If a tour group is inside, the limited space can feel crowded, so you may prefer to wait until the interior clears.
What to see nearby
The chapel sits by the harbour, at the foot of Villefranche’s old town. From here, you can continue into the old town’s narrow streets or visit Église Saint-Michel. The Citadel is another nearby landmark; it houses the town hall, a convention centre, three museums and an open-air theatre.
