En bref

Pick Giverny for Monet's garden, open 1 April to 1 November in 2026 with an adult ticket listed at €13. Pick Auvers-sur-Oise for Van Gogh's last weeks; the Maison de Van Gogh opens Wednesday to Sunday from 4 March to 22 November 2026. Pick Rouen for a year-round day with Monet's cathedral paintings in a museum that is closed on Tuesdays. Do one per day.

Choose Giverny if Monet's garden is the point, Auvers-sur-Oise if you want to follow Van Gogh to the village where he spent his last weeks, and Rouen if you want a full city day that still works in winter. All three are day trips from Paris by train, but they differ sharply in season, closing days and how much planning the transfers need. This page sits beside the Giverny travel guide and the wider France guide to help you pick one.

If you want a palace instead of a painter, read Versailles, Fontainebleau or Giverny.

Which Impressionist day trip should you pick?

Giverny wins on beauty and on name recognition. The house and the water-lily garden are what most people picture, and the trip is simple: a train to Vernon-Giverny and a short shuttle. Its weakness is the calendar. The garden is open only from 1 April to 1 November in 2026, and the village is small enough that a crowd feels tight.

Auvers-sur-Oise is the quiet, story-led choice. Van Gogh painted here in the last weeks of his life, and you can see the inn room where he lived. It rewards people who like to read a place, and it does not reward people who want a garden or a big museum. It is also the most limited by opening days.

Rouen is the practical choice. It is a real city with a Gothic cathedral that Monet painted repeatedly, a fine arts museum that holds some of those paintings, and streets that stay open and busy on any day of the year. If your trip falls between November and March, or your day is a Monday or a Tuesday, Rouen is often the only Impressionist day that works.

Who should skip what? Skip Giverny in winter and in the middle of a July weekend if you hate crowds. Skip Auvers if you have only one weekday that falls on a Monday or Tuesday. Skip Rouen if you want a garden and a small-village mood.

Giverny: the garden day

Giverny is the easiest of the three to execute. Trains from Paris Saint-Lazare reach Vernon-Giverny in about 50 minutes, and a seasonal shuttle (€5 one way, €10 return) or a bike covers the last few kilometers. The adult ticket is listed at €13, with €7 for children aged 7 to 17 and students, and the Fondation highly recommends booking online because queues build once the online quota fills.

Plan the day around the opening hour. The gardens are open from 10am to 6pm, with last admission at 5:30pm, and the Fondation allows only cabin-size bags and says leaving the gardens is final. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours inside, then add lunch and a walk to the church where Monet is buried. The Museum of Impressionisms in the village is open daily from 10am to 6pm in the 2026 season, with a full-price ticket listed at €12.

Auvers-sur-Oise: Van Gogh's last weeks

Auvers-sur-Oise is a village north-west of Paris on the Oise river. Van Gogh lived and painted here in the last weeks of his life, and the Maison de Van Gogh, the former Ravoux inn, preserves the small room where he stayed. Visits can be booked online through the site's own link, and the 2026 season runs from 4 March to 22 November, Wednesday to Sunday. The site says all services are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, apart from the exceptional Easter and Whit Monday openings it announced for 2026.

Nearby, the Château d'Auvers offers an Impressionist-themed experience. Its own page lists opening from Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays, with a closing day on Monday, so check the hours for your date. The village also has the church and the cemetery where Van Gogh and his brother are buried, which many visitors walk in a quiet hour after the inn.

Getting there takes more thought than Giverny. There is no daily direct train. The tourist office lists three standard routes: from Paris Nord on line H with a change at Valmondois, from the RER C to Pontoise and then line H, or from Saint-Lazare on line J to Pontoise and then line H. Count on well over an hour door to door. The Château d'Auvers and the tourist office also list a direct train from Paris Nord on weekends and public holidays from April to early November, which takes about 45 minutes in the morning; check Transilien for the 2026 timetable and the evening return before you plan around it.

Auvers is small, so it suits a half day or a slow full day. It is best from Wednesday to Sunday, outside the school holidays, and with a booking for the inn. If you only have Monday or Tuesday, pick Rouen or Giverny instead.

Rouen: the city day, any season

Rouen is in Normandy, about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half from Paris Saint-Lazare by train, depending on the service. It is the home of the cathedral that Monet painted again and again in different light, and the city's fine arts museum holds some of those canvases, including Monet's view of the cathedral portal and the Albane tower in gray weather, along with his General View of Rouen.

The museum is open daily from 10am to 6pm and is closed on Tuesdays and on listed holidays, among them 1 January, 1 May, 1 and 11 November and 25 December. Access to the permanent galleries is free, which makes Rouen the cheapest of the three days once you have the train ticket. Temporary exhibitions may charge, so check the museum's page for what is on.

Beyond Monet, Rouen has a half-timbered old center, the cathedral itself and cafes, so a day here does not depend on a ticket or a garden. It is the best wet-weather and winter option on this page. Read the Rouen travel guide for the city, and keep in mind that a Tuesday means the museum is closed, though the streets and the cathedral exterior are still worth the trip.

Pick by weekday and season

Closing days can decide the trip faster than taste. On a Monday, Giverny (in season) and Rouen are open, while Auvers' main visits are not. On a Tuesday, Giverny stays open, the Château d'Auvers is open but the Maison de Van Gogh is not, and Rouen's museum is closed. Wednesday to Sunday, all three are available, with weekends busiest at Giverny.

In winter, from November to March, Giverny is closed and the Maison de Van Gogh is shut for most of it, so Rouen is the Impressionist day trip. In April and October, Giverny is quieter and cooler, and Auvers is open on its Wednesday to Sunday pattern. May to September give the fullest garden, with July and August the heaviest crowds.

Write your Paris plan by weekday first, then drop the day trip into the gap. Many museums in Paris close on Monday or Tuesday, which is when people look for something else to do, and that is exactly when two of these three are weakest.

Can you combine them?

Giverny and Rouen can be combined by train in one long day, because Vernon-Giverny is about 40 minutes from Rouen by regional train. The catch is time: the garden takes a full morning, the return to the station depends on the shuttle, and Rouen needs at least three hours to be worth the ride. If you want both, sleep in Rouen and treat the second day as the Rouen day, then return to Paris by Saint-Lazare.

Auvers does not combine with either, because the rail network there runs through Pontoise and not through Vernon or Rouen. Treat it as its own day.

If you drive, a Normandy loop with Giverny, Rouen and a coastal town is a natural weekend, and the Honfleur travel guide shows the next step. Without a car, one site per day is the better rule.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is planning Auvers for a Monday or Tuesday. The Maison de Van Gogh is closed those days, and the village feels empty without it.

The second is assuming Giverny is always open. It is a seasonal site, and a November trip finds the gates shut.

The third is underestimating the transfers. Giverny needs a shuttle or a bike, Auvers needs a change of train, and Rouen needs a longer ride. Check the last train back before you linger.

The fourth is trying to do two in a day without a night in between. The sites are worth more than a rushed hour each.

Read the Paris travel guide for where to base yourself, and the Giverny travel guide for the village if you decide the garden is the day.

FAQ

Which Impressionist day trip from Paris is best?

Giverny for Monet's garden between April and October, Auvers-sur-Oise for Van Gogh, and Rouen for a city day that also works in winter. If you can only do one and it is in season, most people choose Giverny.

Can you reach Auvers-sur-Oise from Paris without a car?

Yes. Regular trains need a change at Valmondois (from Paris Nord) or Pontoise (from Saint-Lazare or RER C). The tourist office and the Château d'Auvers also list a direct weekend and holiday train from Paris Nord from April to early November.

Is Auvers-sur-Oise open on Mondays and Tuesdays?

Not for its main Van Gogh visit. The Maison de Van Gogh is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the Château d'Auvers closes on Mondays. Plan Auvers for Wednesday to Sunday.

Is Rouen worth a day trip for Monet?

Yes. Rouen's fine arts museum holds Monet's Rouen Cathedral and General View of Rouen, and its permanent collection is free. The museum is closed on Tuesdays and some public holidays.

Can you visit Giverny and Rouen in one day?

On paper, yes: Vernon-Giverny is about 40 minutes from Rouen by regional train. In practice the garden fills a morning, so a combined day is long and rushed. Add a night in Rouen for a calmer plan.

Which Impressionist site is open in winter?

Rouen, whose museum is open year-round except Tuesdays and listed holidays. Monet's garden is closed from 1 November to 31 March, and Auvers' Maison de Van Gogh closes after 22 November in 2026.
