How to choose

The Côte d'Azur is a string of towns along one railway, so where you sleep decides how much of your day goes on trains and how the evenings feel. Our Côte d'Azur travel guide covers the sights; this page settles the base, and it fits into a wider trip through France.

The coast runs from Menton on the Italian border to Cannes in the west, with Nice in the middle. Trains stop in every main town, usually every few minutes at peak times, and local buses climb to the hill villages. That means a base in any of the five towns below gives you the whole coast. What changes is the character of the evening, the cost of the room and how you reach the airport.

Three questions decide the choice. First, do you arrive by air? Nice airport is the main gateway, and according to the airport tram line T2 reaches the city center in under 30 minutes and runs every 7 to 8 minutes on weekdays, so Nice has the simplest link of any base. Second, how long are you staying? For three nights or fewer, stay in Nice and avoid changing hotels. For a week, a second base on the quieter side makes sense. Third, how do you feel about beaches? Nice has pebbles, while Antibes and Juan-les-Pins have sand.

Nice is the city that makes the Riviera work for anyone without a car. The airport tram, the main rail station and the seafront promenade are all within a short ride of each other, and the old town has more restaurants than any other town on this page. Trains leave for Monaco, Antibes, Cannes and Menton from the main station, and the airport is the cheapest to reach.

The trade-off is that Nice is a city, with traffic, noise and a busy center in July and August. The beaches are large pebbles, so pack beach shoes. If you want sand, take the train to Antibes or Villefranche for a morning. The old town has narrow streets and rooms can be small; choose a hotel on a side street away from the late-night bars.

Stay near the station if trains matter most, or near the old town and Place Masséna if you want to walk to dinner. Our Nice travel guide covers the market, the tram and the day trips.

À éviter si you want a small harbor town to yourself. Villefranche-sur-Mer or Antibes will feel calmer.

Antibes is a walled old town with a harbor, a covered market and a long stretch of ramparts along the sea. Juan-les-Pins, a short ride along the coast, has a sand beach and a lively evening scene in summer. Together they make the calmest big base on the coast, with fast trains to Nice and Cannes.

Villa Santo Sospir, Côte d'Azur: a house on a cliff overlooking the ocean
Villa Santo Sospir, Côte d'Azur

It suits couples and travelers who prefer to spend the day walking and swimming instead of sightseeing in a city. The old town has small hotels and guesthouses, and Juan-les-Pins has larger seafront hotels with pools. The airport is not far by bus or taxi, but you lose the simple tram link that Nice offers, and you should check the timetable for your arrival time.

The trade-off is cost. Rooms in July and August are among the most expensive on the coast, and the old town fills up for events. If you want the beach but not the price, look at a room in Juan-les-Pins in a hotel a few streets back from the sea.

À éviter si you want a big-city nightlife scene or a single-ride link from the airport.

Cannes: festivals, boats and a polished seafront

3. Cannes

Cannes is the seafront town known for its film festival and trade fairs. The Croisette runs along the beach, the old Suquet quarter climbs the hill behind the harbor, and ferries leave for the Lérins islands from the harbor. It is also the best base for day trips inland to Grasse, which is a regional train ride away; read our Grasse travel guide for the plan.

Cannes works if you want a polished resort feel and an easy boat trip. The main drawback is price during major events, when rooms in the center can cost much more and sell out weeks ahead. If your dates fall near a festival or a trade fair, check the city calendar before you book and compare Antibes as a cheaper alternative.

Choose a hotel near the station if you plan to move by train, or near the Croisette if the beach is the point. The old Suquet has charm and steep streets, and rooms there are often smaller.

À éviter si you travel on a tight budget in May, or dislike dressed-up seafronts.

Menton: quiet near the Italian border

4. Menton

Quiet, gardens, Italy day trips

Menton is the last major town before Italy, known for lemons, gardens and a painted old town. The seafront is calmer than Nice or Cannes, and the hills behind have gardens and walking routes. It suits travelers who want a quiet stay and an easy day trip to the Italian side of the coast.

The trade-off is distance. Menton is about 35 minutes from Nice by train, and about an hour or more from the airport once you include the tram. That is fine for a slow week, but it adds time to a short trip. Hotels are generally cheaper than in Cannes or Antibes, and the town has small guesthouses and larger seafront hotels.

Keep in mind that crossing into Italy on a day trip is simple, but carry your passport, as temporary checks can happen. Our Menton travel guide covers the lemon festival season and the gardens.

À éviter si you want to be near the airport or Cannes, or to spend most evenings in a lively center.

5. Villefranche-sur-Mer

Best for
Quiet evenings, short train hops

Villefranche-sur-Mer is a small harbor town on a deep bay, with a colorful quay, a sand beach and steep streets behind. It is only a few minutes from Nice by train, so you can sleep in a quiet town and spend the day in the city. Beaulieu-sur-Mer is next door, and the village of Èze is a short bus or taxi ride up the hill; see our Èze travel guide.

This base suits travelers who want a quiet evening, a short train ride to Nice and a harbor setting. The trade-off is the choice of restaurants and shops, which is smaller than in Nice, and the steepness of the town, which matters with luggage. Prices are in the upper-middle range.

À éviter si you want a lot of restaurants and shops, or need to avoid steep streets.

From the airport to each base

The way you reach your base on the first evening is part of the choice. For Nice, take tram line T2, which the airport says reaches the center in under 30 minutes. For Cannes, the airport lists two regional ZOU! bus lines, 81 and 620, and line 81 leaves from Terminal 2; the full comparison is in our page on Nice airport to Cannes. For Antibes, Menton and Villefranche-sur-Mer, the usual route is the tram into Nice and then the coast railway, so plan one change and a ticket for each system.

Add time for the border if you land from outside the EU. The Entry/Exit System queue can be long on a busy morning, and a transfer booked for an hour after landing may be missed. If your flight lands late, spend the first night in Nice and move on the next day, since evening trains and buses are less frequent and a taxi to a distant base costs far more than the same ride at midday.

Which base fits which trip

For three nights or fewer, stay in Nice and do not move. For a week, split it: three or four nights in Nice, then three in a quieter town such as Antibes, Menton or Villefranche-sur-Mer. A week of beach days with a few outings suits Antibes and Juan-les-Pins from the start, as you swim from the town and take the train for the rest. A week built around gardens, lemons and the Italian side suits Menton, while a week built around events and boat trips suits Cannes.

Musée Escoffier de l’Art Culinaire, Côte d'Azur

If you travel with children, Nice and Antibes have the most flexible days: a promenade, a beach, a market and plenty of restaurants at normal hours. If you travel as a couple who like evenings at a harbor, Villefranche-sur-Mer and Antibes are the most atmospheric. If you travel on a budget, compare Nice, Menton and the station area of Cannes on your dates, and check whether a room slightly inland costs much less.

Mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is staying in a hill village without a car and then spending every evening waiting for a bus. The second is booking a small town without checking the walk from the station with luggage: Villefranche-sur-Mer and old Antibes have steep or narrow streets. The third is picking a base only on the price of the room, without counting the train fares and the time of the daily ride. The fourth is booking a seafront room in July or August without air conditioning. The fifth is leaving the choice of base until after the flights, when the arrival time may rule out the cheaper options.

Booking tips and the tourist tax

Book early for May, July, August and any weekend with a big event. Late spring and September offer the best balance of price and swimming weather. Compare a room in Nice with one in Villefranche or Antibes on the same dates, since the price gap is often larger than the train fare. For a longer stay, split the trip between two bases: three nights in Nice and a few nights in a quieter town.

French hotels charge a tourist tax per person per night, set by each municipality and collected at checkout. Rates differ between towns, so check the total in the booking process and see our note on tourist taxes in Europe.

Decide on the base first, then plan the movement. Our 5-day Riviera itinerary shows a car-free route from one base, and the train or car guide explains when a rental pays off. Keep tickets and timetables on your phone with a data plan from our connectivity guide, and consider cover from the insurance guide for cancellations and theft.

FAQ

Where is the best place to stay on the French Riviera?

Nice, for most first trips. It has the airport tram, the main station and trains along the whole coast. Antibes and Villefranche-sur-Mer are better if you want a smaller town on the same railway and do not mind a short ride into Nice.

Is it better to stay in Nice or Cannes?

Nice for transport, variety and a long sea promenade. Cannes for festival weeks, boat trips to the Lérins islands and a more polished seafront. Rooms in Cannes cost more during major events, so compare dates before you choose.

Can you stay in one place and see the whole Riviera?

Yes. The coast railway links Menton, Nice, Antibes and Cannes, and local buses reach most hill villages. One base saves repacking, and the longest ride between the main towns is under an hour.

Where should I stay on the Riviera if I do not have a car?

Next to a train station: Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Menton or Villefranche-sur-Mer all have one. Skip hill villages unless you accept bus timetables and steep walks with luggage.

When should I book a Riviera hotel?

As soon as dates are fixed for May, the summer months and big events such as festivals and trade fairs. Late spring and September offer the best balance of price and swimming weather.
