How Sedlec ossuary tickets work

The Sedlec ossuary is the one stop in Kutná Hora where a ticket decides whether you get in. The official Sedlec site says the capacity of the ossuary is limited, that entry is organized in timed slots, and that tickets must be bought in advance for a specific date and time. This page explains the steps, the prices read on the official pages on 4 October 2026, and which other tickets to buy for the day. For the town itself, start with the Kutná Hora travel guide, and for the wider country see the Czechia guide.

The ossuary is the lower chapel of the Cemetery Church of All Saints, which belonged to a Cistercian abbey. CzechTourism describes a medieval Gothic chapel on the remains of about 40,000 people, with chandeliers, a pyramid, crosses and coats of arms made of human bones. The parish that runs it stresses that it is also a working Roman Catholic church where Masses are celebrated, so the booking system and the opening hours both reflect that dual role.

Two details shape the planning. The first is that the ossuary is under restoration. The parish says the work began in 2014 and will run until at least 2030, that the parish is the sole investor, and that the site stays open throughout. The restoration is phased so that visitors can see both the decoration and the work in progress. The second is that the timed slot is separate from the rest of Sedlec: the cathedral nearby can be visited without a reservation during opening hours, so the ticket decides one stop, not the whole site.

Where to buy

Buy from the official seller. The Sedlec site names two channels: online through its own ticket page, and in person at the Sedlec information center at Zámecká 279. It also states that you cannot buy tickets directly in the churches. The information center stands halfway between the ossuary and the cathedral, so it is a natural first stop if you arrive without a ticket and want to ask about the next free slot.

The information center lists daily opening, with shorter hours in winter. From April to September it is open 8:45 to 17:45, in March and October 8:45 to 16:45, and from November to February 8:45 to 15:45, and it is closed on 24 December. If you plan to buy in person, arrive well before the slot you want and ask for the earliest free time, because walk-up availability depends on the day.

Be careful with third-party sellers. Any site that sells ossuary entry should be checked against the official ticket page for the same date, and the guide on official sites versus resellers explains how to compare. A reseller can be reasonable for a guided trip that bundles transport, but check what the listing includes and whether the entry fee is in the price. The page on which European attractions sell out helps you judge how early to book in a given month.

Listed prices for the day

A day in Kutná Hora usually combines three paid sights, and each has its own seller and price. These are the adult prices as listed on the official pages on 4 October 2026. They can change, and several have reduced rates for children, students and seniors that are listed on the same pages.

The Sedlec ossuary was listed at 220 CZK. St Barbara's Cathedral, which sells its own tickets, listed a full ticket at 180 CZK, a reduced ticket at 140 CZK, 60 CZK for children from 6 years and for severe disability cards, and free entry for children up to 6. Its self-guided ticket allows unlimited time and includes an audio guide or a printed guide.

The Hrádek, the Czech Museum of Silver, lists its tours separately. Tour I, about the town's silver, geology and coinage, was 100 CZK for an adult and 70 CZK reduced, with a family ticket at 290 CZK. Tour II, which includes the medieval mine, was 200 CZK for an adult and 160 CZK reduced. A combined Tour I and II ticket was 270 CZK for an adult and 220 CZK reduced. The Stone House exposition on burgher life was 80 CZK for an adult.

The totals in the table add the listed adult prices and nothing else, so they exclude the train, any guide fee, food and the Sedlec cathedral. Treat them as a planning guide, not a quote.

Which tickets to combine

Choose by how much time you have and what kind of traveler you are. Half a day means the ossuary and St Barbara's, with the timed slot first and the church after. St Barbara's lists opening from Monday to Sunday, and the Sedlec page shows the ossuary's hours for the current date, so this is the version most likely to survive a Monday, when the silver museum is closed. Confirm the ossuary hours for your date.

A full day adds the Hrádek. Tour I suits visitors who want the story of why the town was rich, and it needs no booking. Tour II adds the medieval mine, with a helmet and a miner's coat for about 250 m of the original workings, and it lasts about 90 minutes in groups of up to 25. The museum advises booking it, and it excludes children under 6 and is not recommended for people with claustrophobia. Visitors who want the mine but not the surface exhibit should still check what the combined ticket includes before they choose between Tour II and Tour I plus II.

Add the Sedlec cathedral if you have time. It can be visited without a reservation during opening hours, according to the official daily-tours page, so it works as the stop before or after your slot. Its two pages on the Sedlec site list different adult prices, so confirm the amount at the ticket desk or on the ticket page rather than relying on a figure printed here.

Two smaller Sedlec-managed churches exist outside the center. St Anne's Church in Nové Dvory was listed at 50 CZK and the Romanesque St James's Church in Jakub, a 12th-century building with the best preserved ensemble of Romanesque sculpture in the country, at 100 CZK. Both showed closed on the day the pages were read, so check their opening before you plan a detour.

What the ossuary visit covers

Knowing what the slot buys helps you decide how much of the day to give it. The Gothic church was built in the first half of the 14th century on the grounds of the Cistercian abbey and has two chapels, one above the other. The lower chapel holds the skeletal decoration, and the upper chapel was the place for prayer. According to the Sedlec site, the decoration includes four massive pyramids of bones, a crown above them, a chandelier said to contain every bone of the human body and angels in the form of skulls and crossed bones.

The parish is open about what is not known. It says it is difficult to say who made the decoration, when exactly, or why, and that almost nothing is known about the people buried there. The one secular element is the Schwarzenberg coat of arms, created around 1870 as thanks to the family that contributed to saving the ossuary. CzechTourism credits the master builder František Rint, employed by the Schwarzenberg family, with the arrangement you see today, after the Baroque architect Jan Blažej Santini Aichel had remodeled the church.

The official pages do not state how long a visit takes, so treat the slot as a fixed time with a margin around it. Arrive a little early and keep voices low, since the building is a functioning church whose stated message is memento mori, remember death. A separate exhibition called Memento mori is listed at the ossuary as opening soon, so check whether it has opened when you book.

Guided tours and night visits

Guided options exist at several sights, and each is booked differently. The Sedlec daily tours of the cathedral and the ossuary last up to 60 minutes, are led by guides the parish describes as experienced, and must be booked in advance by email. The site also lists night tours as a separate menu item, and CzechTourism describes evening visits in the summer months by candlelight with guides dressed in Cistercian habits, so check the Sedlec night tours page for dates before you count on one.

St Barbara's offers guided tours, a roof tour and an organ visit on request. The cathedral lists a guide fee for a group on top of the ticket during opening hours and a higher fee outside opening hours, and it asks for bookings at least two weeks ahead for these options. For most visitors the self-guided ticket with the audio guide is enough, and a guide matters most for groups or for people who want the stories behind the frescoes.

If you prefer one booking for everything, a guided day trip from Prague can bundle transport and a guide. Check whether ossuary entry is included and whether the slot is guaranteed, since the ossuary is the one sight with a hard capacity. The day trip from Prague page covers the train route if you go on your own.

Mistakes to avoid

The common mistakes are simple. Do not arrive at the ossuary without a ticket, because it is not sold at the door. Do not assume the cathedral price on one page matches the other. Do not plan the silver museum for a Monday, since it is closed unless the day is a public holiday. Do not book the mine tour for a child under 6.

Check the hours on the day. The Sedlec pages post notices when a Mass changes the opening of the cathedral, and St Barbara's does the same, so a quick look at both sites the evening before is cheap. A Mass can move the opening time by a few hours on one day, and a booked slot is easier to keep when you know that.

Finally, treat the numbers on this page as a snapshot. They were read on the official pages on 4 October 2026, and the restoration, the seasonal hours and the prices can all change. The Europe eSIM roundup is worth a look if you want data for the ticket QR codes, and the travel insurance guide covers canceled bookings and missed trains.
