Theatro da Paz

Theatro da Paz was built between 1869 and 1874, as Belém grew during the Amazon rubber boom. The city’s prosperity in the late 19th century helped finance the theatre, which opened in 1878. Its name translates as Peace Theatre.

The building is on Praça da República, one of Belém’s main squares. Its neoclassical design was inspired by Milan’s La Scala. Six Corinthian columns support the façade, whose pale detailing contrasts with the building’s rose-colored exterior.

The interior brings together materials and decorative styles imported from Europe and details connected to the Amazon. Look for Italian marble, French chandeliers, gilt mirrors, precious woods and wrought iron. The main hall ceiling has a painting by Italian artist Domenico de Angelis, showing Apollo in a chariot among motifs of Amazonian flora and fauna.

The theatre’s decoration reflects the wealth of the rubber-boom years. A guided visit also puts that display in its social context, explaining the power and divisions of the period in which the building was created.
