Minimundus

Minimundus is a miniature park on the western edge of Klagenfurt, close to the shore of Lake Wörthersee.

Minimundus is a miniature park on the western edge of Klagenfurt, close to the shore of Lake Wörthersee. It opened in 1958 and holds more than 150 models of famous buildings from around the world, including the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal and the Sydney Opera House. Each model is built at a scale of 1:25 and uses materials such as marble, sandstone and lava basalt. Trains run through the grounds, cranes load containers onto a ship, and a miniature space shuttle launches on a timer. Plan a relaxed afternoon, with time for the restaurant, the bar and the panoramic wheel.

A miniature world on Lake Wörthersee

Minimundus

Minimundus opened in 1958 on the western side of Klagenfurt. The park covers about 26,000 square metres of landscaped grounds, and the setting is green and open, close to the lake.

The models are built at a scale of 1:25. The park states that they follow the original plans and use materials that match the originals, including marble, sandstone and lava basalt. Their size makes it easy to compare the proportions of one building with another, which is useful for anyone interested in architecture and geography.

Landmarks on the route

The collection includes the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, the Taj Mahal, the Sydney Opera House, the Tower of London, Big Ben, the Hagia Sophia and the Great Wall of China. Miramare Castle is one of the first buildings on the route.

Other models include the Vatican, the launch site at Cape Canaveral, several European castles and Asian temples. The route is laid out so you can walk from one continent to the next without a fixed order to follow.

Moving parts and timed displays

Many models are animated. Small trains circle the grounds, cranes load containers onto a cargo ship, windmills and water mills turn, and traffic and people move through the scenes. A computer system runs these movements so they stay in sync.

The space shuttle launch and the opening of the Tower Bridge run on a timer, several times an hour. Check the timing when you arrive so you do not miss the display you want to see.

Grounds, food and getting there

A restaurant, a bar and a coffee shop are on site, along with a gift shop. A panoramic wheel gives an aerial view of the park and the surroundings. Lockers and baggage storage are available, and there is a playground for younger children.

By car, the park is about a 15-minute drive west of Klagenfurt. By public transport, a short train or bus ride from the city centre brings you there, and the park is easy to reach this way. The entrance, restrooms, seating and parking lot are listed as wheelchair accessible.
