Serpentine Falls

Serpentine Falls is a waterfall and picnic spot in Serpentine National Park, about an hour’s drive southeast of Perth.

Serpentine Falls is a waterfall and picnic spot in Serpentine National Park, about an hour’s drive southeast of Perth. Water flows over a smooth granite face into a broad pool, with a short walk from the car park to the falls. Shaded picnic tables, barbecues and toilets make it easy to stay for lunch, and Western Grey Kangaroos are often seen on the grass. For a longer outing, choose a bushwalk such as Baldwins Bluff Nature Track or Kitty’s Gorge Walk. The falls usually flow strongest from late winter into spring.

The walk to the falls

Serpentine Falls

Serpentine Falls sits within Serpentine National Park on the Darling Scarp, about an hour southeast of Perth. From the car park, a short, mostly level sealed path leads towards the falls and a viewing area. The walk is around 400 to 500 metres, making it a manageable stop for a range of ages and fitness levels.

The waterfall runs over a broad granite face into a pool formed by the Serpentine River. At around 15 metres high, it is modest in height but spreads across the rock as it falls. Water flow is strongest after winter rain, generally from late winter into spring. The rock and pool remain a draw when the flow is lower.

Picnics and wildlife

The grassy area near the falls has shaded picnic tables, gas barbecues and toilets, including accessible facilities. It is set up for a longer stop as well as a brief visit to the lookout. Western Grey Kangaroos are often seen grazing nearby. Give them space and do not feed them.

The park is popular, and the picnic area can become busy. Arriving early gives you a better chance of finding space to sit. The park entrance is on Falls Road, off South Western Highway. National park entry fees apply; check the park website for current details.

Longer walks in the park

For more time on foot, Baldwins Bluff Nature Track and Kitty’s Gorge Walk are among the walking options associated with the park. Baldwins Bluff Nature Track is a 6-kilometre return walk, while Kitty’s Gorge is a substantially longer route. One account describes a 7-kilometre walk each way, and another gives a longer route, so check the current trail information before setting out.

Conditions on Kitty’s Gorge vary along the route, with sections described as designed path, service road and rougher bush track. Follow the marked trail arrows and allow time for the full distance you choose. Walking trails are a good alternative if the picnic area is crowded.

Water and rock safety

The pool is often associated with swimming, but information about swimming is not consistent. Some material describes it as a swimming spot, while other guidance advises avoiding the water over concerns about water-borne disease. Check current park guidance before entering the pool.

Do not jump or climb from the rocks. Submerged hazards have been reported, and serious accidents have occurred. The granite edges can also be slippery near flowing water, so take care around the pool.
