Museo Fundacional

Museo Fundacional traces Mendoza’s beginnings at the site where Pedro del Castillo founded the city in 1561.

Museo Fundacional traces Mendoza’s beginnings at the site where Pedro del Castillo founded the city in 1561. Set beside Plaza Pedro del Castillo in the old town, it preserves archaeological remains of the colonial Cabildo, including parts of its foundations, walls and ceramic flooring. Displays also cover the city’s development before and after the 1861 earthquake, with artifacts, photographs, dioramas and models. Most information is in Spanish, so visitors who read Spanish can get more from the exhibits; you can also ask museum staff about the history.

Museo Fundacional

Museo Fundacional stands in the historic area around Plaza Pedro del Castillo, where Mendoza was founded by Pedro del Castillo on March 2, 1561. The museum opened in 1993 to protect and display archaeological remains found on the site.

The colonial Cabildo, or town hall, once stood here. Its foundations, walls and ceramic tiles were uncovered through excavation. The building was destroyed in the 1861 earthquake, which devastated the colonial city. The site later held a public slaughterhouse and, in 1930, a town fair.

What the exhibits explain

Museo Fundacional
Museo Fundacional

The museum presents archaeological finds alongside photographs, dioramas and models that trace Mendoza’s development before and after the earthquake. Pre-Columbian artifacts and remains associated with the old city help place the Cabildo ruins in a longer history of settlement.

Other remains connected with the historic area include the ruins of the San Francisco church, the former Plaza Mayor, a courtyard and an underground water-supply chamber. The displays also address how Mendoza’s original settlement was affected by the earthquake and the city’s later rebuilding and relocation. Most exhibit information is in Spanish, and museum staff can provide additional context.
