Village Vanguard is a basement jazz club at 178 7th Ave S in Greenwich Village, known for its close-up performances and distinctive acoustics. Max Gordon opened the venue in 1935; it became a jazz-only club in 1957. John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Bill Evans are among the musicians who performed and recorded here. Come for a live set in a compact room where the music takes centre stage, and order a drink from the bar. Monday nights bring the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.

A club that found its sound

Max Gordon opened the Village Vanguard in 1935. The club began as a place for poets, writers and performers, with folk music, cabaret and comedy also part of its early programme. Its first home was at the corner of Charles Street and Greenwich Avenue. Gordon later moved it to 178 7th Ave S, into a former speakeasy building.

The venue turned to jazz full-time in 1957. That focus has shaped the club ever since: the small stage and close seating put the musicians and their performance at the centre of a visit. The Vanguard has also hosted recording sessions, including albums associated with John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Bill Evans.

Inside the basement room

The club sits below street level in a triangular basement space in Greenwich Village. Its compact layout gives the room an intimate feel, and its acoustics are a central part of its reputation. The setting is low-lit and close to the stage, so expect a focused listening experience rather than a spacious or highly social night out.

The lineup changes, with established performers and newer talent appearing at the club. Many artists play extended engagements, giving the venue a chance to present a musician across several nights. Check the current programme before choosing a date, since the acts vary.

Monday nights and drinks

Monday is the regular night for the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, a big band with a long-running place in the club’s programme. It is a useful pick if you want to hear a larger ensemble in the room. Other nights feature different jazz performers, so the schedule is the best guide to what you will hear.

There is no food menu. Drinks include cocktails such as a Mai Tai and a Manhattan, as well as lemonade and a non-alcoholic Negroni. A drink purchase is required for each ticket, so factor that into your evening. The room can become crowded; arriving ahead of the show gives you a better chance of settling in before the music starts.
