Union Square Greenmarket fills the north and west sides of Union Square Park in Manhattan with seasonal produce and goods from regional farmers, fishers, bakers and makers. It has run since 1976, growing from a few farmers to as many as 140 vendors in peak season. Browse fresh fruit and vegetables, farmstead cheese, bread, flowers, meat, cider and more, or pick up ingredients for a picnic. Cooking demonstrations and other events add to the market-day activity around the square.

A market with regional roots

Union Square Greenmarket began in 1976 with a small group of farmers. It was created to give regional growers a place to sell in New York City and has since expanded across the north and west sides of Union Square Park. In peak season, as many as 140 farmers, fishers and bakers set up stalls.

The market brings together producers from areas including upstate New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the Berkshires. Its range changes with the season, so the stalls are a place to browse as much as to shop. You can look for fresh-picked fruit and vegetables, heritage meats, farmstead cheeses, bread, jams, pickles, honey, maple syrup, cider and plants.

What to look for at the stalls

Food is the main draw, but the market has plenty to browse beyond produce. Fresh-cut flowers and potted plants add color to the stalls, while bakers sell bread and pastries. Meredith’s Bread is a recommended stop for baked goods; Martin’s Pretzels, Tonjes Farm Dairy and Beth’s Farm Kitchen are also named among the market’s producers. Products vary by season and vendor.

In fall, look for apples, cider and apple cider donuts. Other seasonal finds mentioned at the market include summer peaches, sunflowers and figs. Local wine and spirits, including whiskey and gin, are also part of the market’s wider mix.

Events and the surrounding square

The market is part of a larger public square where people gather, play chess and listen to music. Its stalls sit among the activity of Union Square Park, with shops and cafes nearby. The Market Information tent is a place to look for cooking demonstrations; other events can include book signings, tours and tastings. Beer and spirits pop-ups take place seasonally.

Union Square has also been a gathering point for public rallies and demonstrations. Its name originally referred to the meeting of Broadway and Fourth Avenue. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the square became a site for labor protests, and unions and political groups established nearby headquarters.
