At 122 E 42nd St in Manhattan, the Chanin Building is a 1920s Art Deco skyscraper by architect Irwin S. Chanin. Its brick and terra-cotta exterior rewards a slow look, with decorative details that continue inside where access is permitted. Stop by in daylight to see the facade clearly, and take a few minutes to look up as well as along the street. The building is a working office, so security procedures apply and interior access may be limited.

A brick and terra-cotta skyscraper

The Chanin Building was built between 1927 and 1929. Irwin S. Chanin commissioned the tower, designed by Sloan & Robertson in the Art Deco style with assistance from Chanin’s architect, Jacques Delamarre.

The building rises 56 stories. Its height is 649 feet without the spire and 680 feet with it.

Looking around the building

The exterior and interior both have decorative details. As the building is used for offices, access inside is subject to security procedures. Stay attentive to instructions from building staff, and enjoy the architecture from the public street if you cannot enter.
