Keauhou Bay, on the Kona coast south of Kailua-Kona, pairs clear blue water with a small beach, a fishing pier and a historic shoreline. Come to snorkel, swim or watch fish from the docks; calm conditions also suit learning to paddleboard or kayak. The bay is a departure point for snorkel and manta ray trips, and a small historical park adds context to a stop by the water. Parking is limited and fills early, so arrive ahead of busy periods or be ready to walk.

Keauhou Bay and its royal history

Keauhou Bay
Keauhou Bay

Keauhou Bay lies on the Kona coast, about five miles south of Kailua-Kona. Its Hawaiian name, ke au hou, means “the new era.” The bay is associated with the birth of Kauikeaouli, who became King Kamehameha III.

In 1814, Keopuolani, the highest-ranking wife of Kamehameha I, traveled by canoe to the bay. Kauikeaouli was said to have been stillborn. According to the account preserved in the supplied material, he revived after being placed in Ka‘opa Spring at the edge of the bay. A small historical park gives visitors a place to explore the area’s past alongside its waterfront.

A small beach sits beside the bay, while the pier draws local anglers and gives you a view of fish in the water. Snorkeling and swimming are popular ways to spend time here. The water is also calm enough for activities such as kayaking and paddleboarding, including for people learning to paddle.

This is a working waterfront as well as a place to swim. Boat and snorkel trips leave from the bay, and the pier can get busy around departures. If you want a quieter look at the water, take that activity into account when choosing when to arrive.

Planning a visit

Keauhou Bay works as a short stop to see the water, walk by the pier and visit the historical park, or as the starting point for a longer outing on the ocean. A typical brief visit takes about 20 to 30 minutes. If you plan to swim, snorkel or join a boat trip, allow more time.

Parking is limited and can fill quickly. Arriving early can save you a longer walk from a farther parking spot. Bathrooms and showers are available, and there is a picnic area. The waterfront is open to public use, including in places where private-property signs may be visible.
