At the eastern end of Odori Park, Sapporo TV Tower gives you a 360-degree view of the city from its observation deck, about 90 metres above ground. Look down the park toward central Sapporo and out to the mountains; on clear days, the view can reach Ishikari Bay. The tower dates to 1957 and is a familiar part of the city skyline. In winter, the deck is a useful vantage point for the Snow Festival and White Illumination, while evening brings a view of Sapporo’s city lights.

Sapporo TV Tower stands at the eastern end of Odori Park, a long green space that runs through central Sapporo and divides the city into northern and southern areas. The tower’s position makes the park easy to pick out from above: look west along its length and you can see how it cuts through the city grid.

The tower was built in 1957 by architect Tachū Naitō, who also designed Tokyo Tower. It rises 147.2 metres, and its observation deck sits about 90 metres above ground. Built for broadcasting, it has since become a city landmark and a viewpoint over the park and surrounding neighbourhoods.

From the observation level, the view takes in Odori Park, central Sapporo and the mountains beyond. On a clear day, the outlook can extend to Ishikari Bay and the Ishikari Plain. The scenery changes with the seasons: flowers and greenery fill the park in warmer months, autumn brings foliage, and winter covers the city and park in snow.

After dark, the lit streets give the city a different character. Sunset is another good time to look out, with the mountains forming the edge of the view. The deck is especially well placed for seeing large events in Odori Park. During the Sapporo Snow Festival, you can look down over the snow and ice sculptures; winter illuminations add lights across the park.

Inside the tower

The tower has five storeys, with shops and visitor facilities among the lower levels and a restaurant and souvenir shop also noted inside. The observation deck is reached by elevator from the third floor. The journey takes about a minute, and the elevator has glass sides, so the ascent may feel exposed if you are uneasy with heights.

Look out for stamp stations on different levels if you enjoy collecting them as you explore. There are souvenir shops on both an upper and a lower level, with different offerings. A character shrine and fortune capsules are also located on the observatory level. You can buy admission at the counter rather than arranging a ticket in advance.
