What should I check before I book flights?
Three things: that your passport is valid for as long as the country asks, whether your passport needs a visa or an online travel authorization there, and whether anything you are going for sells out, such as a festival or a timed-entry sight. Do I need a visa or an online travel authorization?
It depends on your passport and the country. Many visa-free trips now need an online authorization before you fly, such as the US ESTA, Canada's eTA, Korea's K-ETA or the UK ETA. Apply on the official government site: lookalike sites charge extra for the same form.
Is travel insurance worth it?
We would not travel without medical cover. A few countries require insurance for some visas, most do not, and the USA is where hospital bills are highest. Read the limits and exclusions before you buy: scooters, trekking at altitude and pre-existing conditions are where claims are most often refused.
eSIM, local SIM or roaming?
For most short trips an eSIM is the easiest if your phone is not locked to a carrier: install it on wifi before you fly and switch it on when you land. A local SIM can work out cheaper on a long stay. Roaming on your home plan is the simplest and usually the most expensive, so check the daily rate first.
How do I work out a daily budget?
Add up one ordinary day: a bed, three meals, local transport and one paid sight. Multiply by your nights, then add the big one-off costs such as flights, a rail pass or event tickets. Our trip cost calculator does the sum with prices we have checked, each with its source.
