Stay near the Old Market and Pub Street for a first visit of three or four nights: dinner is on foot and tuk-tuks wait outside. Choose the river or Wat Bo for quieter nights within about a kilometer of the market, and the Angkor road for a resort pool on the way to the temples. No base is within walking distance of Angkor Wat, so choose by your evenings and by where you will rest through the midday heat.

How to choose a base in Siem Reap
Stay near the Old Market for a first visit: you can walk to dinner, and a tuk-tuk for the temples is never more than a few steps away. The Siem Reap travel guide covers the town and the temples, and the Cambodia guide has entry rules and onward routes. The choice is between four areas: Pub Street and the Old Market, the river, Wat Bo with its back streets, and the road north to Angkor.
Distance to the temples does not separate them. Measured in a straight line on OpenStreetMap, the west gate of Angkor Wat is about 6.6 km from the Old Market and about 5.5 km from the Royal Gardens at the north end of town. Nobody walks that before sunrise, and the gap between the nearest base and the farthest is about two kilometers, which a tuk-tuk covers in minutes. The ticket office is no reason to pick an area either. Angkor Enterprise puts it on Road 60, 4 km from the center, and sells the same passes on its website, in its app and at self-service kiosks.
What does separate the areas is the evening and the middle of the day. Temple days begin when the park opens at 5:00 and break for the hottest hours, so you will be in your room at noon and out again at dusk. Choose by where you want to eat at night, how much noise you can sleep through before an early alarm, and whether you want a pool for the break. Price bands ($, $$, $$$) are a rough guide to how the areas compare with each other, and no room rates are quoted.
1. Pub Street and the Old Market
The Old Market, Psar Chas, sits beside the river at the south end of the center, and Pub Street is a block away. The streets between them hold most of the town's restaurants and bars, with the night markets a few minutes farther on. Rooms come in a wide range, and tuk-tuk drivers wait around the market, which makes it simple to arrange the next morning's ride the night before.
Arrival is easy from here. The airport shuttle bus ends at a station on 7 Makara Road, which runs east from the river less than a kilometer from the Old Market. On a stay of two or three nights that convenience counts: no evening is spent on transport, and a late dinner after a sunset at the temples is a short walk. The Angkor ticket office is about 3.7 km away in a straight line, for anyone who would rather buy the pass at a counter.
The trade-off is sleep. Pub Street is loud on busy nights and a temple day starts before dawn, so ask for a room at the back of the building or book on a side lane. UK government travel advice names this area for another reason, set out in the section on evenings below.

2. Along the river
The Siem Reap River runs north to south through the town, from the Royal Gardens down past the Old Market. That stretch is about 1.1 km in a straight line, so any riverside address is within a walk or a very short ride of the restaurants. The lanes on both banks are quieter than the market streets, and the paths along the water are shaded.
This is the middle choice, and it suits a stay of four or five nights. You sleep away from the bars and still reach them on foot, and the north end of the river is the closest part of the center to the temple road.
The trade-off is the walk home. UK travel advice for Cambodia says to take extra care at night and in isolated areas, and to keep to well-used, well-lit roads. After dinner, walk back along the main streets or take a tuk-tuk.

3. Wat Bo and the back streets
Wat Bo is the district on the east bank, named for its pagoda, which stands about 900 m from the Old Market in a straight line. The streets around it are residential, with local cafés, guesthouses and lower rates than the market streets. It suits travelers who are staying a week, working between temple days, or keeping to a budget.
The area is no farther from Angkor than the Old Market is, so temple mornings lose nothing. What changes is the evening: the center is a walk across one of the bridges or a short tuk-tuk ride. After dark, take the tuk-tuk, and agree the fare before you get in.

Choose Wat Bo for residential streets and local cafés, and take a tuk-tuk home after dark.

4. The Angkor road
Charles de Gaulle Boulevard leaves the Royal Gardens, passes the Angkor National Museum and runs north to Angkor Wat. Several of the town's large resort hotels stand along it, with gardens, pools and restaurants on site. From the lower part of the road the west gate of Angkor Wat is about 4.5 km away in a straight line, and the ticket office about 2 km.
Choose it when the hotel is part of the trip. A family that goes out at dawn and comes back by 11:00 spends the long middle of the day at the pool, and a resort makes those hours easy.
The trade-offs are price and evenings. This is the top price band, and dinner anywhere but the hotel means a tuk-tuk into town and another one back. On a short stay that is two rides a night you would not take from the Old Market.

Early starts, the midday break and how many nights
The temple timetable changes what to ask a hotel. The park admits visitors from 5:00 and Angkor Wat opens then, so ask whether the kitchen can pack a breakfast and whether reception is staffed before dawn. At midday you come back for a pool, a dark room and air conditioning, and those are worth more than a view. On the last day, a late checkout or a shower before the flight is worth asking for when you book.
Count nights from the pass. The 3-day Angkor pass can be used on any three days within seven, so four nights give three temple days back to back, and five put a day off in the middle at no extra cost. Children under 12 need no ticket, though Angkor Enterprise says they may be asked for a passport as proof of age. Angkor in 3 days sets out the order of the temples and where the pass is sold.
If you buy the pass online from your room, do it the afternoon before the first temple day. Angkor Enterprise's support line answers from 5:30 AM to 5:00 PM every day, and its FAQ tells buyers whose ticket has not arrived by email to check the spam folder, then call with the payment reference. At 4:45 on the morning of a sunrise there is nobody to ask.
Evenings around Pub Street: what UK travel advice says
The UK government's safety advice for Cambodia mentions the Pub Street area by name. It reports that lone women have been sexually assaulted there by men claiming to be motorbike taxi drivers, and says to be wary of approaches from strangers and offers of transport. Arrange the ride home through your hotel or an app, and do not take one from a driver who approaches you.
The same page says most theft in Cambodia is bag snatching, often from passing motorbikes, including from passengers in tuk-tuks. Its advice is to carry a bag on the side away from the road and to choose tuk-tuks with metal grilles at the back and sides. It warns of drink spiking in bars used by foreigners and of deaths from alcoholic drinks containing methanol, and it notes that fake dollar bills have been handed out as change in shops and clubs. Check your change, and keep your drink in your hand.
From the airport to your hotel
Siem Reap Angkor International Airport is a long way east of town, and no base is close to it. The airport's own transport page describes two ways out. The shuttle bus counter is on the left after you leave the arrivals hall, and the bus runs to a station on 7 Makara Road in town. It does not drop at hotels; the operator has its own tuk-tuk service for the last leg. The pick-up point for Grab cars is 60 m from the international exit, and the tourist service center is beside that exit if you need help with either. A transfer arranged by your hotel is the third option, and the simplest after a long flight.
Sort the paperwork before the flight. UK travel advice says passengers who land at Siem Reap must submit Cambodia's free e-Arrival card within the 7 days before they arrive; the Cambodia guide covers the visa, and digital arrival cards in Asia compares the forms across the region. The same advice says land crossings between Cambodia and Thailand are suspended, so a trip that continues to or from Bangkok goes by air. It also says to make sure the hotel manager or landlord registers your stay in the immigration department's online system, which matters most in a rented apartment. Set up an eSIM so the ride app works when you land, and buy travel insurance that covers treatment and medical evacuation, as the UK advice recommends for Cambodia.
Perguntas frequentes
What is the best area to stay in Siem Reap for a first visit?
The streets around the Old Market and Pub Street. Restaurants, the night market and tuk-tuks are at the door, and the airport shuttle's town station on 7 Makara Road is less than a kilometer away. Light sleepers should book along the river or in Wat Bo.
Can you walk from Siem Reap to Angkor Wat?
No. The west gate of Angkor Wat is about 6.6 km from the Old Market in a straight line, and the other temples are spread far beyond it. Hire a tuk-tuk or a car with a driver by the day. Angkor Enterprise says visitors can also rent and ride a scooter.
Should you stay near the Angkor ticket office?
There is no need. The office is on Road 60, 4 km from the center, but Angkor Enterprise also sells passes on its website, in its app and at self-service kiosks, so you can buy before you leave your hotel.
How many nights do you need in Siem Reap for Angkor?
Four nights for three temple days, and five if you want a rest day in the middle. The 3-day Angkor pass can be used on any three days within seven, so a day by the pool costs nothing.
How do you get from Siem Reap Angkor airport to a hotel in town?
By airport shuttle bus, a Grab car or a hotel transfer. The shuttle counter is on the left after you leave arrivals and the bus runs to a station on 7 Makara Road in town. It does not drop at hotels, so add a tuk-tuk for the last leg.
