Stay in the city center and Al Haffa for a first trip, because the old market, the beach market and most restaurants are close. Choose a beachfront resort for pool days, Taqah for Wadi Darbat and Sumhuram, or Mirbat for quiet and history. The airport's posted taxi fares rise from OMR 7.000 to the center to OMR 25.000 to Mirbat.

How to choose a base in Salalah
Where you sleep in Salalah decides how much of each day goes on the road. The Salalah travel guide covers the sights, and the wider Oman guide shows how Dhofar fits a longer trip. Salalah is spread along a coastal plain, and the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism describes Dhofar as a region of beaches, springs, forts and mountains, so no single base is close to everything. The honest question is which direction you will drive most often: into the markets, along the beach, east toward Taqah and Mirbat, or west toward Al Mughsail.
The airport gives a useful first measure. Salalah Airport sits about 10 km from the city center, and its official taxi office posts one-way fares by zone: OMR 7.000 to the city center and nearby districts such as Al Haffa and Al Saada, OMR 10.000 to the resort strip, OMR 15.000 to Taqah and OMR 25.000 to Mirbat. These are the airport's posted fares as of the date this page was checked, and the taxi office confirms the fare and gives you a slip before you ride. Treat the numbers as a ranking of distance more than a budget line: every extra band is a longer drive back to the markets and the airport.
The second measure is the season. The ministry dates the khareef season from June 21 to September 21, with monsoon mist and drizzle on the mountains, followed by As-Sarb in September and October and a winter season from October to April. In khareef the hills are the attraction, so a base on the east side shortens the trip to the lakes. In winter the beach matters more, so a resort or a center base with a short ride to the sand makes sense. The khareef or winter comparison settles the month itself.
Price bands below are rough guides for a double room per night: $ for a simple guesthouse or apartment, $$ for a mid-range hotel, $$$ for a resort. No room rates are quoted, because they swing with the school holidays and the khareef weeks.
1. City center and Al Haffa
The center is the base that makes the most plans easy. The ministry's Dhofar guide begins a Salalah visit at the Sultan Qaboos Mosque in the heart of the commercial center, then points to Al-Husn Market, the traditional old market known for incense, frankincense products, handicrafts and Dhofari clothing. Al-Hafah Beach Market, with modern shops, restaurants and cafes, is the evening counterpart. Both sit in the Al Haffa area, which is why the airport groups the center with Al Haffa, Al Saada and Al Dahreez under one fare.
For a first trip this is the sensible choice. You can walk to a market, eat without a car, and still reach the sights by taxi or rental car. The ministry also lists several malls in the city, including Salalah Gardens Mall and Al-Saada City Mall, which helps on the hottest or wettest afternoons. If your plan is three or four days of sightseeing, the savings on transfers and the choice of restaurants outweigh the lack of a private beach.
The trade-offs are practical. A center hotel rarely has a resort-style pool and beach, and you will drive or take a taxi to Al Mughsail, Wadi Darbat and Mirbat. In the khareef weeks the season draws visitors to the whole region, so check central rooms before you fix your flights.

2. Beachfront resorts
The resort strip is where the beach holiday happens. The airport's fare table gives the resort hotels their own band at OMR 10.000 one way, a step above the center, which reflects a longer transfer on the coast. The ministry's guide also lists Marina Hawana Salalah for marine tours, with restaurants and cafes around the marina, and water parks such as Hawana Aqua Park and Naseem Water Park, so a family can fill a day without a car.
This base suits travelers who want to swim, eat on site and treat the sights as day outings. It also suits a second week after you have seen the city, when the plan is to rest between drives. In khareef the beaches are not the main draw, so a resort base then makes sense only if the hotel is a destination in itself or the price is good.
The limits are distance and cost. You pay more for the room, the taxi and the meals, and the souq is a ride away. If you plan to explore daily, a car or a driver turns a resort into a reasonable base; if you plan to rest, the pool does the work. Check what the resort includes, and ask whether it runs shuttles to the market.

3. Taqah and the east coast
Taqah is the east-coast base for travelers whose days are about water and hills. The ministry places Wadi Darbat just after Taqah, describing a ribbon of lakes below a tufa dam, waterfalls, a Darbat Overlook and boat rides on the lake. Taqah itself has a 19th-century fort, the Bayt Kofan Heritage Inn, a museum and a beach, and the ministry mentions Al-Askari Tower for coffee at sunset. Sumhuram Archaeological Park at Khor Rori, part of the UNESCO-listed Frankincense Land, lies about 37 km east of Salalah, so the east side shortens that trip too.
The airport lists Taqah at OMR 15.000 one way, and it also lists a separate group of resort hotels on the Taqah side at the same fare. Choose this base when you plan two or more days in the east, or when you want a quieter pace than the city. In khareef it puts you close to the green hills.
The cost is a longer ride to the center's restaurants and to Al-Baleed and Mughsail on the other side. Check that your property serves dinner, or plan to drive in. A car matters more here than in the center, since the lakes and the fort are not within walking distance of each other.

Choose the east coast when Wadi Darbat and the fort matter more than the city.

4. Mirbat
Mirbat is for travelers who prefer an old fort town to a resort. The ministry describes it as one of Dhofar's significant historical wilayats, once famous for breeding horses and exporting them across the Arab world, with Mirbat Fort, an old souq beside it and beaches with coral reefs for fishing and exploring. In the hills behind, the guide lists the Tiqq cave and sinkhole, Hashir Pass, baobab trees and Jebel Samhan, which rises to 2,100 meters and holds a nature reserve.
The airport lists Mirbat at OMR 25.000 one way, and a separate resort at the higher OMR 30.000, so the transfer is a real part of the decision. This base works for a long stay, for travelers with a rental car, and for people who want mornings in the hills instead of the city. It is a weak choice for a short trip, since a day in each direction eats the schedule.
Dinner and nightlife are limited compared with the center, so confirm what the property offers. The advantage is atmosphere and the chance to see the fort and the old souq on foot.

Quick picks by traveler type
First-timers who want markets and a short transfer: the city center and Al Haffa. Families and beach travelers: a beachfront resort, ideally with a car on the days you want the springs. Nature travelers in khareef: Taqah, for Wadi Darbat and the east. Travelers on a long stay who want quiet: Mirbat, with a rental car. Travelers on a tight budget: a guesthouse or serviced apartment in the center, where the posted airport fare is the lowest and the restaurants are the most varied.
Solo women travelers can note that Salalah Airport lists a Female Yango (Otaxi) service, booked in the Yango app by choosing Female Taxi, for arriving female passengers. Check the airport's page before you rely on it.
Choosing by season
Season changes the logic. In khareef, from June 21 to September 21 according to the ministry, the hills are green and misty, with temperatures it describes as 20 to 28 degrees C. A base in the east or a center base with a car both work, and it is sensible to check rooms early. In As-Sarb, in September and October, the fog lifts and the greenery remains, which is a quieter moment for the same plan.
In winter, from October to April, the weather is clearer, the beaches are the draw and a resort base earns its price. The ministry also lists the sardine season, Al-Dawagh, in October and the frankincense harvest in April, which add local color to those months. Whatever the season, check the weather the day before a mountain or wadi trip. FCDO warns that Omani wadis can flash flood after heavy rain from October to March, and that tropical cyclones from the Indian Ocean sometimes affect Oman in July and August.
Choosing by length of stay
Two nights is a city stay: Al-Husn market, the beach market and Al-Baleed, with a taxi for the rest. Three or four nights suit the center or a resort base with a rental car, using the plan in Salalah in 3 days. Five nights or more can be split: a few nights in the center, then two in Taqah or Mirbat to cut the driving.
If you are flying in from Muscat, remember that the ministry puts Dhofar about 1,000 km from Muscat, so the flight is the usual way. Read the Muscat travel guide if you are combining the capital with the south, and compare the two destinations by season before you book.
Mistakes to avoid
The first mistake is booking a distant property for a short stay. A night in Mirbat on a three-night trip spends a large share of the schedule on the road. The second is assuming you can walk between the sights; the springs, the lakes and the blowholes are spread across a wide area. The third is arriving without a car or a driver plan: the airport itself says to book a rental car in advance, especially SUVs, and the counters are on level zero of the terminal.
The fourth is ignoring the weather. In khareef, mist can hide viewpoints, and roads in the hills can be slippery. The fifth is booking a non-refundable rate for the peak khareef weeks without checking cancellation terms. The last is forgetting the dress code outside the resort: FCDO says to dress modestly in public areas, covering the tops of arms and legs below the knee, and not to wear swimwear except at tourist beaches or pools.
Booking tips for Salalah
Reserve khareef weeks and winter holidays early, and choose a refundable rate if your flights are not fixed. Ask what the rate includes, such as breakfast, a pool and any shuttle. Confirm that your hotel can store luggage if your flight is late.
Arrange your airport transfer before you land. The taxi office, on the eastern side of the arrivals forecourt, confirms the fare and gives you a slip; if you prefer a pickup, ask your hotel what it offers. For the days in between, a rental car or a guided tour covers the spread-out sights; compare options in the Oman transport guide. A local data plan helps with maps on the coast and the mountain roads, so compare eSIM options before you fly.
Read the travel insurance guide before you pay for a non-refundable rate, and check the entry rules for your passport on the Oman guide before you book flights.
Perguntas frequentes
Where is the best area to stay in Salalah?
The city center and Al Haffa for most first trips: the old Al-Husn market, the Al-Hafah beach market and a wide choice of restaurants are close. Choose a beachfront resort if pool and sea days matter more than walking.
How much is a taxi from Salalah Airport to the hotels?
Salalah Airport posts OMR 7.000 one way to the city center and OMR 10.000 to the resort strip, OMR 15.000 to Taqah and OMR 25.000 to Mirbat. The taxi office confirms the fare and gives you a slip before you ride.
Where should you stay in Salalah during khareef?
Any base works, but book early: the ministry dates khareef from June 21 to September 21, the green season. Taqah and Mirbat put you closer to Wadi Darbat and the hills, while the center keeps the markets within reach.
Is Taqah a good base for Wadi Darbat?
Yes. The ministry places Wadi Darbat just after Taqah, with lakes and waterfalls, and lists Taqah Fort and Taqah Beach in town. The trade-off is a longer run back to Salalah's restaurants and Al-Baleed.
Do you need a car if you stay in the city center?
Not for the markets and the beach market, but the springs, Mughsail, Darbat and Mirbat are spread out. The airport advises booking a rental car before you land, especially an SUV, or use a taxi or tour for the longer days.
