Buy the cableway ticket when you arrive, because it stays valid for seven days, and ride on the first clear morning. Book Robben Island for the 09:00 sailing on day 2 so a canceled ferry can move to day 4. Drive or tour the Cape Peninsula on day 3, and start day 4 at Kirstenbosch with the afternoon kept free. One adult pays R1,975 in entry tickets at international rates, before the Boulders fee.
Cape Town in 4 days at a glance
Four days cover Table Mountain, Robben Island, the Cape Peninsula and Kirstenbosch if you fix one booking and let the other float. The Cape Town travel guide has the background on each sight, and the South Africa guide shows what fits before and after. The order below is built around the two things the weather cancels: the cableway, which closes in wind and cloud, and the Robben Island ferry, which stops in rough seas.
The two tickets behave differently, and the plan uses that. A cableway ticket is valid for seven days and can be refunded inside that week, so it can wait for a clear morning. A Robben Island ticket is for one date and one sailing. Put the island on day 2, early enough that a canceled sailing can move to day 4, and take the mountain on the first morning the cableway reports open. Day 3 goes around the Peninsula by road. Day 4 starts at Kirstenbosch and keeps its afternoon free for whatever the weather pushed back.
The route works from a base in the City Bowl, at the Waterfront or on the Atlantic side; where to stay in Cape Town compares them. Prices are the rates for international visitors that each operator published on 13 October 2026, in rand.
1. Day 1: Table Mountain and the City Bowl
Open the cableway's site or app before breakfast. It posts whether the cars are running, the wind and visibility at the top, and the waiting time at each station. In September and October the first car goes up at 08:30, the last car up leaves at 18:00 and the last one comes down at 19:00. From February to April the first car is at 08:00. On a clear morning, be at the lower station for the first car. The cableway's own advice is that afternoons are generally quieter, which makes a ride around 15:00 the second choice.
The full list is on the cableway's ticket prices page. MyCiTi routes 106 and 107 from the Civic Centre stop at the top of Kloof Nek Road, and a free shuttle runs from the Lower Tafelberg Road parking area to the station. The cableway asks e-hailing passengers to get out at that same stop. At the top, staff lead free 30-minute walks on the hour from 09:00 to 15:00, starting at the Twelve Apostles Terrace. Take a windbreaker even on a hot day: the Kirstenbosch garden's safety page describes summer cloud that settles on the summit with no warning and turns it cold and wet.
Spend the afternoon in the City Bowl on foot, in daylight. The Company's Garden, Greenmarket Square and Wale Street in Bo-Kaap, the district of brightly painted houses on the slope of Signal Hill, are each about half a kilometer from the next in a straight line. Finish on the Sea Point Promenade before sunset and take a ride back, because UK travel advice says not to walk around after dark.
Signal Hill and Lion's Head are the well-known sunset walks, and this plan leaves them out for a reason. The same UK advice for South Africa reports violent attacks and muggings against hikers on both, and tells visitors to avoid quieter areas of the park in the early morning and evening.

2. Day 2: Robben Island and the Waterfront
Take the 09:00 sailing. The tour lasts 3.5 to 4 hours with both crossings, each of which takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the boat, so the island fills the morning and you are back for a late lunch. Bring your passport or another photo ID: staff check identification against the ticket at boarding.
The schedule is on the museum's tour types page. The ferry lands at Murray's Bay Harbour, and a bus takes each group around the island with a guide: the graveyard of people who died of leprosy, the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe's house, the Bluestone quarry and the army and navy bunkers. The tour ends inside the Maximum Security Prison, at Nelson Mandela's cell. The island has no restaurant, only a small shop with snacks and drinks. The museum recommends walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen, and a seasickness tablet an hour before boarding for anyone prone to it.
The afternoon belongs to the Waterfront: lunch on the quays, then the Two Oceans Aquarium on Dock Road if you want something indoors. If cloud closed the mountain on day 1 and it is clear now, go up this afternoon instead. The last car up is at 18:00 in September and October, and this is the quiet half of the cableway's day.

3. Day 3: Chapman's Peak, Cape Point and the Boulders penguins
Go out along the Atlantic and come back along False Bay. Cape Point's own directions follow the coast road from Sea Point past Camps Bay and Llandudno to Hout Bay on the M6, then Chapman's Peak Drive to Noordhoek, and on through Kommetjie and Scarborough to the park entrance. Chapman's Peak Drive is a toll road, and its operator posts the current road status on its site. When it is closed, use the False Bay road in both directions.
Prices and hours are on Cape Point's visitor information page. Inside the gate the speed limit is 60 km/h and the drive to the Cape Point parking area takes 10 to 15 minutes. The funicular starts at 09:00 and climbs to the viewing point below the old lighthouse; a path does the same on foot. The Cape of Good Hope itself is a separate headland to the west of Cape Point. You must be out of the park by closing time, and vehicles that leave late are fined. Mobile signal in the park is limited, so download the free audio tour before you set off. Cape Point says whales pass on their migration from around June to October.
Return up the False Bay side through Simon's Town, where the African penguin colony at Boulders is part of Table Mountain National Park and charges its own SANParks conservation fee at the gate. Keep your distance from wildlife on the shore. UK travel advice warns that seals along the Peninsula can bite and that rabies has been detected in them. From Simon's Town the coast road continues through Fish Hoek toward Muizenberg and the M3, which runs back to the city.
Driving is the flexible way to do this day and a tour is the easy one. For drivers, UK travel advice says to keep doors locked and windows closed at junctions, put valuables in the trunk and stay on main roads; a navigation app may route you through less secure areas. A tour fixes the stops and the time at each, and somebody else watches the road on Chapman's Peak.

4. Day 4: Kirstenbosch and the spare afternoon
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden lies on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, 13 km from the city center, and opens at 08:00 every day. Walk up through the garden to the Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway, known as the Boomslang: a steel and timber bridge 130 m long that lifts you 12 m above the ground through the trees of the Arboretum. It is included in the entry fee.
Fees and hours are on SANBI's Kirstenbosch information page. Parking is free at Gates 1, 2 and 3. The hop-on hop-off bus stops at Gate 1, but its first arrival is at 09:50 and its last at 16:20, so take a ride if you want the garden at opening.
For lunch or a tasting, Groot Constantia is a wine estate south of the garden. Its opening times list the cellars and manor house from 10:00 to 17:00 seven days a week and the tasting room from 09:00 to 18:00, with the last tasting ticket sold at 17:00. It closes on Good Friday and Christmas Day.
The afternoon is the spare one. Use it for the cableway if the mountain has been closed all week, or for a rebooked Robben Island sailing at 13:00 or 15:00. If neither is owed, go to Camps Bay beach and swim between the red and yellow flags.

What to book ahead, and what to leave open
Book Robben Island first, for the 09:00 sailing on day 2. The museum sells tickets subject to availability and recommends booking early. A ticket is good only for the date and time printed on it, and a change needs 48 hours' notice and carries an administration fee. Refunds are paid when the museum cancels the sailing, and otherwise only for a passenger who was in the hospital. Buy from the museum's own booking page: its terms call the ticket non-transferable and the resale of ferry tickets a criminal offense.
Leave the cableway open. A standard ticket has no time slot, costs R55 less online than at the ticket office, and can be rescheduled or refunded through Webtickets while it is valid. The cableway accepts online tickets only from Webtickets and its named partners, which is the plainest case for the rule in official site or reseller. Fast Track buys a time slot and a way past the queue for R1,200 round trip, about two and a half standard tickets, and earns its price only when your one clear morning is also your last.
The Cape of Good Hope gate and Kirstenbosch sell tickets online and at the entrance, so both can wait until the day. Added up, one adult at international rates pays R475 for the cableway, R600 for Robben Island, R515 at the Cape of Good Hope gate, R115 for the funicular and R270 at Kirstenbosch: R1,975 before the Boulders fee, the Chapman's Peak toll, transport and food. App-booked rides and the cableway's status page both need mobile data, so sort an eSIM before you land.
When wind or cloud wins: how to reshuffle
If the cableway is closed on the morning of day 1, do the City Bowl walk first and look at the status again at midday. If it stays closed, trade day 1 with day 4 and go to Kirstenbosch, or hold the ticket for the afternoon of day 2. Nothing is lost while the seven days run, and a ticket that never gets used can be refunded online before they end.
If the ferry is canceled on day 2, the museum refunds card payments to the card and repays cash tickets in cash the same day. Rebook for the afternoon of day 4 at the Nelson Mandela Gateway while you are standing in it, then spend the morning at the Waterfront or on the mountain. Day 3 has no ticket tied to a date, so it can trade places with day 4 when the forecast for one is clearly better. A sailing that never runs is refunded, but the flights and rooms around it are a matter for travel insurance.
Hiking up when the cableway is shut is a different undertaking. UK travel advice calls the Table Mountain trails strenuous, says rescuers are called out regularly, and tells hikers to check that the cable car is running if they plan to ride down. The Kirstenbosch safety page says not to set out in cloud, mist or very strong wind, never to hike alone, to carry at least 2 liters of water each and to be back before dark. It advises groups of five or more; the UK advice says four or more.
Who should change this plan
With three days, keep days 1 to 3 and move the island to day 1, so that a canceled sailing still has two days to land in. The mountain then takes the first clear morning or afternoon after it.
Between May and August the numbers tighten. The first car goes up at 08:30 and the last at 17:00, the museum runs three sailings and the last is at 13:00, the Cape of Good Hope gate opens from 07:00 to 17:00, and Kirstenbosch closes at 18:00. The spare afternoon on day 4 can then hold only the 13:00 boat, so visit the garden at opening.
Families should look at day 2 before booking. The island tour is up to four hours with a ferry at each end and no restaurant, so pack food for small children. Infants under 2 travel free on the ferry with a birth certificate or passport, children under 4 ride the cableway free and children under 6 enter Kirstenbosch free. A fifth day belongs to the Cape Winelands, and travelers with a car and a week in hand can continue east along the Garden Route.
Perguntas frequentes
Is 4 days enough for Cape Town?
Yes. Four days cover Table Mountain, Robben Island, the Cape Peninsula with Cape Point and Boulders, and Kirstenbosch, and still leave one free afternoon for whatever the weather postponed. A fifth day goes to the Cape Winelands.
What happens if the Table Mountain cableway is closed?
The ticket waits. Cableway tickets are valid for 7 days, so you ride on the next open day, or reschedule or refund the ticket online within those 7 days. The cableway posts its open or closed status, wind and queue times on its site and app each day.
What happens if the Robben Island ferry is canceled?
Robben Island Museum refunds the ticket: card payments go back to the card and cash tickets are repaid in cash that day. Rebook for a later day at the Nelson Mandela Gateway. This plan keeps the afternoon of day 4 free for that.
How much is entry to Cape Point for international visitors?
The standard gate fee for the Cape of Good Hope section is R515 per adult and R250 per child aged 2 to 12, valid to 31 October 2026, with prices rising each 1 November. The Flying Dutchman funicular is R115 round trip on top of that.
Do you need a car for a 4-day Cape Town itinerary?
Only for the Cape Peninsula day, and a day tour replaces it. MyCiTi buses and app-booked rides cover the cableway, the Waterfront and the City Bowl. Kirstenbosch is 13 km from the center, with free parking and a hop-on hop-off bus stop.
