Hellemann Tower and Town Wall Walkway sits on Müürivahe Street in Tallinn’s Old Town. Climb the medieval tower and follow a restored stretch of the city wall for views across red roofs, church spires and the old streets. Information panels add context as you walk, and the tower’s stone steps give a sense of the fortification’s age. The stairs are narrow and uneven, so take your time on the way up. Come early for a quieter walk and bring cash for the entrance.

Hellemann Tower stands on Müürivahe Street, beside a section of Tallinn’s medieval town wall that is open to the public. The restored walkway runs along the top of the fortification and connects with the tower. From above, you can look across the Old Town’s red roofs, church spires and narrow streets. The tower also gives a sense of how the wall and its towers formed part of the city’s defences.

The stretch open to walkers is about 200 metres long. Information panels along the way explain aspects of the building and its history. Take time with them as you move between the tower and the wall, rather than treating the route only as a lookout.

The tower and its medieval setting

Tallinn’s fortifications date in part to the 13th century, when the wall and its towers protected the city. Hellemann Tower is associated with the 14th century and is part of the surviving defensive structure. Tallinn’s wall was once much longer and had more towers and gates than remain today; preserved sections and towers can still be seen around the Old Town.

The tower has had different uses over time, including as a prison and a café. Today, visitors can climb its stairs and walk the adjacent wall. The stonework and tight passages make the route feel quite different from viewing the fortification from the street.

Climbing the tower

The ascent uses narrow, steep and uneven stone steps. Move carefully, especially when passing others, and consider whether the climb suits you if stairs or heights are difficult. From the upper level, the view takes in the rooftops and spires of the Old Town; views from the wall also help you see how the historic streets sit within the old defences.

An early visit can mean a calmer walk than at midday. Bring cash for admission, as cash-only payment has been reported. The attraction’s entrance arrangements have not been consistent in visitor accounts, so do not rely on being able to pay by card.
