At Markt 1 on Bruges’ main square, Historium uses seven themed rooms, film, sound and special effects to recreate life in the city during its 15th-century Golden Age. Follow the story of Jacob, an apprentice to painter Jan van Eyck, through scenes of medieval Bruges, then choose the virtual reality experience for a flight past the city’s historic buildings. The Historium Tower adds a view over Market Square. Interactive displays and a child-focused story make this a useful history stop for families as well as adults.

A story set in Golden Age Bruges

Historium Bruges
Historium Bruges

Historium sits at Markt 1, on Bruges’ main square, in a neo-Gothic building constructed in 1902. Inside, its main experience recreates the city in the 15th century, when Bruges was a centre of trade, art and culture.

The Story follows Jacob, an apprentice to painter Jan van Eyck, and Anna, who is connected to Van Eyck’s painting of the Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele. Their story gives the walk-through a human thread as you move through seven themed rooms. Sets, film, sound and special effects evoke scenes from medieval life, including the city’s port and old streets.

The Historium Story is the central walk-through experience, with an audio guide providing the narrative as you pass from room to room. Multimedia displays and interactive elements add historical context along the way. The sequence is designed to engage children as well as adults, so it can work as a family introduction to Bruges’ past.

A separate virtual reality experience takes you on a journey through the city’s Golden Age, including a flight past 15th-century architecture. The VR section is brief, and its sense of height can feel intense. Some areas of the route are also tight, so factor that in if enclosed spaces are uncomfortable for you.

The tower and Market Square

The Historium Tower gives you a view over Markt, with the square’s buildings and the Belfry in sight. It is a good way to connect the recreated city inside with the historic centre just outside. Check which experiences are included in your chosen ticket before you go, as the Story, virtual reality and tower are distinct parts of the visit.

Set aside roughly 35 to 60 minutes, depending on the experiences you choose. Booking ahead is recommended, and an off-peak visit can help you avoid the busiest periods. Audio guides and the interactive displays are useful for getting more from the rooms without rushing through them.
