Gentpoort is one of four surviving medieval gates in Bruges, set beside a canal on the edge of the historic centre. Its tall defensive towers give a sense of the scale of the city’s former fortifications, and the gate still carries traffic through its arch. You can walk around it for free, though you cannot go inside. Visit after dark to see it lit, or include it on a walk along the city’s ring and onward to the windmills.

Gentpoort, also called the Gate of Ghent, is one of four medieval city gates still standing in Bruges. It formed part of the defensive walls and controlled a route into the city. The other surviving gates are Ezelpoort, Smedenpoort and Kruispoort.

The gate’s large scale hints at the extent of the walls that once enclosed Bruges. Its Gothic military design and paired towers make it a distinctive landmark beside the canal. The structure has stood through changes to the city and remains in use as a passage for traffic.

Gentpoort sits on the southeast side of Bruges’ historic centre. You can include it on a walk around the city’s ring, then continue along the canal towards Kruisvest and the surviving windmills. The route also connects with paths past Minnewaterpark and the Water Tower.

The gate is not open for visitors to enter, so the stop is an exterior visit. The esplanade beside it provides space to sit on the grass. In summer, the city sets out picnic tables and chairs; visitors should take their rubbish away.
