En resumen

Stay in Kihei for most first trips: it is central, has condos with kitchens and sits 20 to 25 minutes from the airport. Choose Wailea for calm beaches and luxury, Kaanapali and Kapalua for a West Maui resort strip, Paia for surf and an early Road to Hana start, and Hana only for a slow overnight. Do not split a short trip across three coasts.

How to choose

Maui is one island, but not one place. The west coast, the south coast, the north shore and the road to Hana are 30 to 120 minutes apart, and where you sleep decides how much of your trip is spent in the car. The Maui travel guide covers the sights. This page settles where to base yourself, and how that choice fits a wider Hawaii trip.

The island has two broad beach zones. West Maui, around Kaanapali and Kapalua, has sunset views and a classic resort strip. South Maui, from Kihei through Wailea to Makena, is drier and sunnier, with calmer water at many beaches and the shortest drive from the airport. The north shore around Paia is a surf and cafe town, and Hana, on the east side, is a remote village at the end of a winding road.

Three things decide the choice. The first is what kind of days you want: beach and resort, or a mix of drives and hikes. The second is how many days you have, because moving bases costs half a day each time. The third is the season. Winter brings whales and bigger surf on some coasts, and school holidays fill rooms everywhere.

Price bands below are relative: $ is a budget hotel or simple room, $$ a mid-range hotel or condo, $$$ a beachfront resort, $$$$ a luxury resort. Rates are not quoted here, because they change with the season and with resort fees and parking charges, which many Maui resorts add on top of the room.

Kaanapali is the long beach on West Maui, lined with large resorts, with a beachfront walk that links the hotels and a few shops and restaurants. Kapalua, a short drive north, is quieter, with golf, a bay with good snorkeling in calm conditions and a more secluded feel. Both face west, so sunsets are the highlight.

It suits couples and families who want a resort with pools and a beach at the door. The snorkeling off the rocks near the beach is a draw, and whale watching in winter is easy from the shore. The area is also the base for visiting the north-west coast.

The trade-off is distance and context. It is the farthest of the main bases from the airport and from Haleakalā, and Lahaina, the old town nearby, is still recovering from the August 2023 fire. Visit with care, follow local guidance and spend money at businesses that have reopened.

Evítalo si you want to walk to a range of restaurants and shops, or you plan to see Haleakalā at sunrise. South Maui is closer.

Kihei is the practical, central base. A string of beaches lies along the coast road, and condos with kitchens fill the blocks behind them, so you can eat breakfast in and save on meals. It is the closest of the beach areas to the airport, and it is a straightforward drive to Wailea, Makena, Lahaina and the road up Haleakalā.

ʻIao Valley State Monument, Maui

It suits families, longer stays and anyone watching the budget. The water is calm at some beaches, especially in the morning, and snorkeling spots are a short drive away. The area has supermarkets, casual restaurants and shops along the main road.

The trade-off is polish. The main road is busy, and the area is plainer than Wailea or Kaanapali. It has less of a resort feel and more of a local, beach-town one. Check the exact location of a condo, since the walk to the sand varies a lot.

Evítalo si you want a polished resort with a full spa and a quiet setting. Wailea or Kaanapali suit you better.

3. Wailea and Makena

Calm beaches, luxury

Wailea is the upscale resort district south of Kihei, with wide, gentle beaches, a coastal path and some of the island's most polished hotels. Makena, farther south, is quieter, with larger, wilder beaches and fewer places to eat. The water is often calm, and the sun is reliable.

It suits honeymooners, couples and anyone who wants a quiet, comfortable stay and is happy to pay for it. It is also close to the airport and a good start for Haleakalā, so you can combine a luxury stay with a sunrise or sunset trip up the mountain.

The trade-off is price. Rooms are among the most expensive on the island, and eating out costs more. If you want a similar setting at a lower price, consider a condo in Kihei and spend your days on the Wailea beaches.

Evítalo si you are watching the budget or want a casual local feel. Kihei suits you better.

4. Paia and the North Shore

Paia is a small surf town with cafes, boutiques and a laid-back feel, and it sits near the start of the Hana Highway. The north shore has wind and surf, rather than calm swimming beaches, and it draws windsurfers, kitesurfers and surfers. It is also close to the airport, which makes arrival and departure easy.

It suits travelers who like a local, creative atmosphere, or who want a very early start for the Road to Hana. The town has guesthouses, small inns and rentals rather than large resorts, so options are more limited. Our guide to the Road to Hana explains the timing.

The trade-off is the beach. The north shore can be windy and rough, and a calm swimming beach is a drive away. There are few resort-style pools. Choose this base for the character and the Hana start, not for a classic beach holiday.

Evítalo si you want a calm swimming beach and resort amenities at your door. Kihei or Wailea suit you better.

Stay here for a characterful base on the road to Hana.

5. Hana

Hana is a remote village on Maui's east side, at the end of the winding Hana Highway. Staying overnight lets you see the waterfalls, beaches and the Kipahulu section of Haleakalā National Park without a long drive back on the same day. Evenings are quiet and the stars are bright.

It suits travelers who want to slow down and who accept limited services. There are few rooms, so book early, and there are few restaurants and shops, many with short hours. Bring snacks, cash and a full tank of fuel, and plan dinner before you arrive.

The trade-off is flexibility. You are far from the airport, the main beaches and anything else on the island, and your plans depend on the road. Use Hana as a one-night stop on a loop, rather than as the base for a whole stay.

Evítalo si you want nightlife, a wide choice of restaurants or a flexible base for the whole island. Kihei or Wailea suit you better.

Use this as a one-night stop on the Hana loop, for stars and waterfalls.

Who should skip each base

Kaanapali and Kapalua do not suit travelers who want Haleakalā at sunrise on their first morning, because the drive east is long. Kihei is the wrong pick for anyone who wants a polished resort with spa, fine dining and quiet streets at the door. Wailea and Makena are a poor match for tight budgets and for people who prefer casual local places to eat. Paia is not for guests who want a calm beach and a resort pool. Hana is not for anyone who wants a flexible base, a late dinner or an easy airport morning.

If you are unsure, ask which part of the trip you cannot give up. If it is a long beach morning, choose the south coast. If it is the sunset and a resort pool, choose West Maui. If it is the road to Hana, add a night there to a different base instead of moving everything.

A two-base plan for a week

For seven nights, two bases usually work better than one or three. A common split is four nights on the south coast, in Kihei or Wailea, for beaches and the Haleakalā morning, followed by three nights in Kaanapali or Kapalua for sunsets and the north-west coast. The south coast first means you start close to the airport and the mountain, and the resort strip at the end gives you a slow, easy finish.

Oneloa Beach, Maui: Rocky coastline with a sandy beach and blue ocean
Oneloa Beach, Maui

If the Road to Hana is a priority, put Paia or Hana in the middle, not at the end. A night near the start of the road makes the early departure easy, and a night in Hana turns a long drive into a calm overnight. Keep the move between coasts to mid-morning, after breakfast and checkout, and accept that it takes most of the day with a stop for a swim or lunch.

For a long weekend of three or four nights, stay in one place and do one trip, not three. A single base with one big outing is more relaxing than a schedule that trades beach time for car time.

Costs and traps to check

Maui rooms carry more extras than most places. Resort fees and parking charges can be a daily add-on, condos may add cleaning fees, and some rentals set minimum stays. Compare the total for your dates, not the headline rate, and read the cancellation terms, since weather and flights can change plans.

A rental car is part of the cost on most trips, and it sells out in busy weeks. Book it together with your room, and check whether your base needs parking at the property. A kitchen can cut meal costs, so a condo in Kihei often beats a resort room when you count food, though a resort can be better value if you want activities and dining on site.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Splitting a short trip across three coasts. Each move costs half a day.

  • Choosing a Hana overnight as your only base. Services are limited and the road decides your plans.

  • Ignoring the Lahaina context. Visit with care, follow local guidance and support businesses that have reopened.

  • Booking late for winter. Whale season and school holidays fill rooms and cars.

  • Forgetting resort fees. Add them to the room rate before you compare.

Booking tips: when and how

Book early for December to March, which is whale season, and for summer and school holiday weeks. Rental cars sell out in the same periods, so reserve both together. Choose a flexible rate if you can, and check resort fees, parking charges and cleaning fees, which can add a lot to a condo or resort price.

Do not split a short trip across three coasts. Each move costs half a day, and the drives are long. For a week, two bases work well, for example four nights in Kihei or Wailea and two in Kaanapali. For a long weekend, pick one. Our Maui travel guide has the rest of the planning.

If you are weighing Maui against another island, read Maui or Kauai for a comparison, and see the Haleakalā National Park guide for the sunrise reservation that decides many mornings.

Before you fly, line up the basics: an eSIM for maps on the Hana and Haleakalā roads, travel insurance with medical cover, and the ESTA guide for entry rules.

Preguntas frecuentes

Where is the best place to stay in Maui for a first trip?

Kihei for most first trips. It is central, near the airport, and has condos with kitchens at lower prices. Choose Wailea if you want calm beaches and a luxury resort, or Kaanapali for a classic resort strip on the west side.

Is it better to stay in Kaanapali or Wailea?

Kaanapali for sunsets, snorkeling and a lively resort strip on West Maui. Wailea for calmer water, upscale resorts and a quieter, more polished feel. Wailea is also closer to the airport and Haleakalā.

Is it safe to stay in West Maui after the Lahaina fire?

The resort areas of Kaanapali and Kapalua are open to visitors. Lahaina itself is still rebuilding after the August 2023 fire. Check current local guidance before you plan, and respect closed areas and the community.

Should I stay in Hana?

Only if you want a slow overnight on the east side or want to see Waiʻānapanapa and Kipahulu without rushing. There are few rooms, limited dining and no nightlife, so book early and bring food and cash.

Do you need a rental car if you stay in a Maui resort?

For most trips, yes. Beaches, Haleakalā and Hana are far apart, and transit and rideshares are limited. You can skip the car if you stay put at a resort and book a few tours.

How far ahead should I book a Maui hotel?

As soon as your dates are firm, especially for December to March and summer. Whale season and school holidays fill rooms and rental cars, and the best condos go first.
