Po‘olenalena Beach Park, also called Chang’s Beach, is on Makena Alanui in South Maui, between the Wailea resorts and the Big Beach area. Its long stretch of soft sand, mellow waves and shaded spots make it easy to settle in for a swim or a walk. Snorkeling is best at the far end, where coral, fish and sea turtles have been spotted. Come in the evening for open sunset views and a quieter feel; bring your own food and drinks, as nearby facilities are limited.

Po‘olenalena Beach Park stretches along Makena Alanui in South Maui and is also known as Chang’s Beach. The wide shoreline has soft sand, with trees offering shade near the beach. The water can be mellow for swimming, though it deepens quickly in places. Conditions change, and large waves can bring stronger currents, so take care before heading into the water.

The beach works well for a low-key visit: swim, relax under the trees or walk along the shore. Some visitors have spotted whales from the beach. There is free parking, and a portable toilet is near the parking area. There are no showers, so plan to rinse off elsewhere. Bring your own snacks and drinks, since facilities nearby are limited.

Snorkeling and sunset

For snorkeling, head toward the far end of the beach. Fish, coral and sea turtles have been seen there, and low tide is suggested for better conditions. The water is not always suitable for snorkeling, especially when it is rough, so check the surf before going in and stay within conditions you can handle.

Po‘olenalena is also a place to linger into the evening. Sunset views draw people to the open shoreline, and the beach is often quieter then than during the day. The far end is used by some nude sunbathers; keep that in mind when choosing where to settle or walk. The broad sand and sunset setting are also used for wedding ceremonies and photo shoots.
