At 4974 Uakea Road in Hāna, the Hāna Cultural Center is a small museum about Hawaiian culture and the history of the town and its people. Its displays include local artifacts and old photographs, with material on traditional crafts, music, dance and early missionary life. The center is run by community volunteers, so a visit can also be a chance to ask questions about what you’re seeing. The historic courthouse on the grounds is still used for hearings, and a reconstructed Hawaiian thatched structure is another point of interest.
Displays about Hāna and Hawaiian life

The center’s exhibits cover Hawaiian history and the cultural identity of Hāna. Look for displays on traditional crafts, music and dance, as well as material about early missionary life. Local artifacts and old photographs offer points of reference for the people and history of the district.
The collection also includes Hawaiian quilts, kapa, fish hooks and nets, and poi boards. A display called “Faces of Hāna” tells stories of people from East Maui. Take time to ask a volunteer about the objects and the stories behind them; the center is run by community members.
The courthouse and thatched structure

The historic courthouse stands on the center’s grounds and is still used for hearings once a week. Its continued use makes it part of Hāna’s present-day community life as well as its history.
The center also has a reconstructed Hawaiian thatched structure, known as a hale. A Hawaiian master builder is responsible for the reconstruction. If the builder is working during your visit, you may be able to learn about the process and, if invited, help with the work. Call ahead to find out whether someone will be there.
